JVC HR-S5965 timer record not working

I have a JVC HR-S5965 VCR which is about three years old and recently the timer record function has stopped working whilst using the remote. I contacted JVC and they suggested it was the remote. I purchased a secondhand model rather than just the remote. The problem was the machine not the remote. The replacement VCR worked fine for two months and I now find I have the same problem. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and is it repairable?

Can you elaborate on the symptoms?

The remote works for all functions, except for timer record. When I bought the second machine the remote had the same problem, but both remotes worked ok on the replacement VCR. When I press the programme button on the remote nothing happens and as you can only set timer record using the remote I now have to manually record.

It is unlikely to be a faulty remote...but probably user error...I think you are probably doing something wrong.
What happens if you press the button marked as no9 in the user manual remote diagram...The one with the clock/question mark...I bet there are past timer events needing deleted.
Jvc Vcrs in common with a few other makes have to have the timer events manually deleted after they have occured...unlike a few others which automatically clear the events after they have recorded...if the timer memory is full I believe that may prevent the "Programme" info screen from being displayed leaving you believing the actual button on the remote is not working.

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried it and I get "ERR" on the VCR's screen. So if that is the problem it looks like I cannot clear it.
