OK, I eventually bit. I have patiently followed the panel projector market for 2.5 years and a few things have wetted my interest but it always seems to come back to D'ILA.

Who has any experrience of the JVC DLA SX21 projector or who has sources on info on it?

It would be used with a new KD HD Leeza scaler.

Someone out there must have similar interests / some experience?

    Hello Beekeper,

I have also been following this one for a while.

I have been tempted by G10, G11, G15 for years, almost imported an M15 or M20 from that cheap place in japan a month or two ago, but fixed lens was a problem.

I use my projector for viewing digital images from my other hobby of photography, so the 1400 X 1050 4:3 resolution is just what I need :)

I bit the same bullet in April 1998 and bought DILA G10. So far it had one fault (the lamp would start) and went to service for couple of days. My first lamp is now just under 1000hrs.

In 1998 it was a digital projector to have especially after calibration and some internal scaler tweaking. Five year down the line I cannot readily see picture that would be obviously better. Mark Grant is right for wanting this projector for his digital images, as its colour accuracy is very good.

If I were to upgrade today I would make the same decision as you: SX21 (or alternatively G15).

One think that I learned over the years is that technology, especially in this area, does not move fast. With that in mind, if you can find a 2nd hand DLA go for it. Recently M15 was offered for good price.

    Yes.....Call me! or email

I was with the UK Home Theater distributor for this product on Tuesday. Saw it compared to HT300plus. We didn't have time to get DVI out of HD-L to it but I will be travelling down to see them with my toys so we can try and get something cool from it. Can't say much more just now.....

Bumping this up so Gordon remembers to post something when he has tweaked the best from the SX-21.

To keep Beekeeper busy for a few nights, here is a link to a page of links, that have more links in some of the threads :)

Apparently the Sharp 10000 ''Kicks it's butt''

I can not speak for the Sharp 10000.

However, a friend of mine has the SX21 with a Panamorph lens. After playing with it using an HTPC via DVI, in my opinion the image quality with dvd is very good with a very smooth image. When you watch D-vhs the image is absolutely stunning.

Perhaps it does not have the black levels of some DLPs, but this shortfall is outweighed by the quality of the image.

Unless something comes to market within the next 3 months which totally blows away DILA technology, I will defiinitely purchase an SX21.

BTW, from what I have seen, the UK price is the cheapest in Europe.

This is basically where i am coming from, it is great value and has ticks in all the boxes except black, if the D'ILA tweak boys set about the 21 as well as a grey screen this could be a serios bit of kit.

    Agreed.

I will be using a Firehawk microperf with it.

    Be happy to.

I am also most interested to hear what Gordon has to say.

Calibrated G10 averages around 500:1 CR while G15 goes up to 800:1. I think SX21 would be in the similar region as G15.

There maybe a merit in including a 2nd hand G15 in your preferred choice. If the price is right, say around £1,000-£1,500 it maybe an evry bit as good solution but much cheaper. I'll need to add the cost of replavement lamp and some expence for hush box.

If you can find a G15 for 1500 pounds in good shape and calibrated, it is worth getting it. However, having seen what DVI looks like, on an SX21 out of the box, it could be a difficult call.

Although the SX21 does not make as much noise as a G15, I still believe it needs a hush box.

    Hello Branxx,

If you see a G10, G11 or G15 for sale used, and that cheap, send me a message :)

Hush box not needed for me, as I will project through a hole in the wall if the throw length is long enough.

We have JVC's demo X21 at the moment. I am waiting for my copy of DVE PAL to arrive before I start doing anything else with it. This X21 is due to go back to JVC soon so we will hopefully have our own X21 demo before it leaves.

I have only had the chance to fire it up twice so far, and then only to get the zoom and focus etc sorted out.

I will try to give it a good run when our DVD player is sorted out.

Somehow I must have missed this post a while back.

I've got the SX-21 at home for the weekend to do DVI trials on it.

If you want any info on it Beekeeper I can mail you some out.

I saw the SX-21 being demo'd on JVC's stand at this year's IBC exhibition in Amsterdam. This baby easily rivals CRT. I'm not sure what it was being fed with, but even with my nose practically touching the screen, I could see NO visible structure. It's also a lot smaller than JVC's previous D-ILAs, so much more descrete for HC applications. At £5K it's well out of my price range, but if I had the money it's definately the way I would go!
