Still can’t get over how bad the CGI for Cavill was.

7/10 is a fair score. It was an ok film but could have been a lot better.

One thing that majorly annoyed me was

when they showed the Lantern part at the beginning-why even bother adding that in when GL/GL Corps wasn’t even going to factor in the film...?

The thing with the DC films is that I’ve actually enjoyed them, but because they went down the Universe route trying to catch up with Marvel/MCU but didn’t take the time to establish the characters within that universe, everything after MoS has just felt rushed and disjointed.

I watched it tonight and thought it very "meh".

The only character who came off remotely well was Wonder Woman, and even then she can't save a pointless and forgettable story.

The CGI is unforgivably bad - why they feel the need to green screen normal everyday scenes like standing in a corn field I'll never know.

It's a shame, because although I don't really know much of the DC universe I actually quite liked Batman vs Superman. It just feels like they are desperate to have their Marvel world but don't want to put the effort in with great screenplays, acting etc.

I want to watch this simply to see the CGI for Cavil's upper lip... There are photos online, but mostly look like internet memes and not actual stills or video from the movie...

Or the result of the cameras used, both Arrii film and digital cameras (including the Alexa 65) are shown on Imdb. There is a clear visible distinction between the film and digital scenes with grain being apparent one minute and then flipping to clean digital the next (and vice versa). Most apparent at around the 1 hour 30 minute mark where a sunset is seen without a hint of grain visible and then just shortly afterwards the sunset sky is covered in grain. The Superman house scenes were mostly grain free as I recall.

If grain goes with Snynder scenes and clean with Whedon ones, it perhaps makes it very easy to see who filmed a particular scene (although I doubt it is that clear cut). What was surprising is that grain wasn't added to the digital camera filmed scenes to make a seamless whole as is often the case.

On my setup I noticed elevated black levels especially in the opening sequence and had to make a few settings changes to 'improve' the picture to my liking.

5/10 score for the movie is harsh. I for one enjoyed it and would have given it at least a 7 on that front. For me it's a 'keeper'.

I think we've reached over-saturation point with ensemble superhero movies, there doesn't seem much new on offer.

Superhero movies in general (with the odd exception) seem to be repetitive and predictable.
It's time the studios stopped milking the genre.

Unlikely, 5 of the highest grossing films of last year were comic book films.

This year, the biggest so far has been black panther, added to the fact the avengers 3 will probably break all records, studios will carry on cashing in.

Whether they are good or not is another point......

Maybe not the strongest of recommendations but I did enjoy this more than BvS, it suffers from a very unmemorable villain and live action/CG integration that’s so weak in parts it’s like watching Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Despite issues I still enjoyed the film. There are some lovely sequences and in particular the opening music/credits. I can play that on repeat quite happily. Overall in terms of disc mastering quality it's pretty good, colours seem rich and vibrant, audio is clean and dynamic.. no complaints there. Just a shame they adjusted the original vision of 2 B2B films into one into a comedical mess with forced jokes, sloppy CGI, poor music score and jaring differences between original shots an reshoots.

I can't say for sure but I know Snyder originally shot the film in Super 35 (they specifically mention that in the included featurettes on the disc) and I think the reshoots (which they never mention once in the featurettes) were done on the Arri Alexa 65. So as you say the appearance or disappearance of grain should help identify the Whedon reshoots from the original Snyder footage.

I was thinking of playing a drinking game of having a drink whenever the camera changed but quickly decided that wasn't a sensible route to go down as it was happening so frequently...;)

I can’t see any dodgy cgi on cavill’s moustache. Just looks like a normal lip to me! Loved the movie as I watched it last night for the first time. Chill out everyone. It’s a superhero movie and not a Citizen Kane!

To the reviewer , I believe the original aspect ratio was 1.85:1. But it has been adapted to full screen 16:9 for the Blu ray , ie. 1.78:1 . So the left and right side edges of the frame have been slightly chopped off.

I thought the first quarter of this was pretty good with the introduction of the characters. It just went downhill after the film seemed to be going at a fast pace trying to fit in to much. Soundtrack was really good i give it a 6 overall down to the film being average

It's interesting as the early scene Cas mentions on the rooftop I'm quite certain is a Joss scene and not Snyder as assumed.

I quite enjoyed it, more so than I thought.

Final act seemed like Justice League on a computer game, but good popcorn fun.

      Preferred BvS Ultimate Edition though.

The reviews of the disk I have read are largely positive, so I might pick this one up when it comes down to the low teens in price.
I'm sure I've said this before but, I didn't hate it but it's just a little old fashioned. There were some good moments, WW's intro was the best I have seen her and her short fight with Supes was good too. Batman's intro wasn't too shabby either. Those got me into the film. The flash had a funny scene trying to battle Superman but the in final scene he looked like a string puppet.

I was a DC kid and thought Marvel was boring especially Hulk, Iron Man, Cap and Thor. And yet here we are now with me loving those characters. At the same time somewhat hating my preferred heroes in their current incarnations.
      Overall 5/10
      .

      Awful CGI
      Poor pacing
Not enough backstory prior to the ensemble. Something the Avengers benefited from the individual character movies
      6/10 max from me

      Visual geekary post...

There is a "theory" that the movie is not meant to be presented in 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 ratio... but rather that it was supposed to be 2.40:1 or 2.35:1 ratio like most of Snyder's other movies... But that this was somehow changed once Wheadon took over...

Otherwise, why shoot Super 35mm? Why not shoot regular 35mm?

For those of you who have seen the film on disc or in cinema, do you find that it has Snyder's usual attention to the visuals? Do the compositions seem cropped?

      A catastrophic demolition of Batman.

Looks more like Iron Man than Batman.
The Dark Knight is not impressed.

As mentioned above, some scenes yes some scenes no. There are some glorious shots and some quite poor, some of the best ones didn't even make it into the film at all or were replaced by poor, softer ones.

      Quite bizarre really.

Odd one this. Certainly not as awful as BvS or Suicide Squad but the result is so boringly average I think it might just be my least favourite DCEU movie to date. Maybe a case of missed opportunities and the obvious potential for what could have been done shining an even bigger spotlight on the many problems present on screen. There's just no real standout pieces with most of the action scenes not really taking advantage of what these characters can do when share the same screen. When the one that sticks out is Flash pushing WW's sword back to her you've probably got some issues!

To be honest if you're after a DC team up movie from the last 12 months... go watch the CW crossover Crisis on Earth X. It genuinely outdoes JL on pretty much every level while giving some fantastic 'good lordy that's cool' action. Hell one moment with Supergirl nodding to Superman 2 (and that's the limit of the spoilers from me) is right up there with anything from Ragnarok or Black Panther in my book.

      Challenge Accepted ;)
I stopped watching the majority of CW stuff a few months back but I'm going to try and watch this crossover event.

P.S. Nice to meet a fellow El Reg reader :)
