I only recently had idea of building a HCPC and I think I've already got most of what i need, Please just read through spec and let me know if this would be suitable.

    PIII 450
unknown motherboard came in a package
Super ATI Radeon VE 64MB AGP VGA TV Out
    SB live 5.1
10gb maxtor (I know it wont hold much)

need to buy cd rom and floppy but thats nothing.

If there is something not suitable let me know and give me a cheap alternative as im a bit skint.

I'm sure you did a typo, but get a DVD Rom and not a CD Rom!:p

Everthing looks about the minimum spec needed to play DVDs, so should be OK.(My laptop plays DVDs perfectly when running a PIII at 500hz and 650hz - speed step)

Good luck, because if you get it right they can look superb...:)

You can burn a VCD or SVCD from an Mpeg file (not sure about .avi or Divx). A lot of DVD players will play these just fine.
Nero software is good for this.

I should output fine. The S-Video output of that Radeon is pretty good and you'll be able to set 4:3 formats no probs with the right software setup. Whether you'll get smooth DivX playback with a PII 450 is another matter. I'd say yes, but it'll be borderline. Mpegs/non-divx avi's won't be a problem.

yes it will play it fine, I used to have a very old P2-400mhz with radeon and played divx/dvd's to my tv. I now use another PC (dual p3-550mhz) hooked up to my projector and that also plays everything smoothly, even HDTV samples.
