RPGs on them all, in most cases, bring a LOT of cash.
What games are you into though?

Here's a short list of some of the more expensive games. If you see them, grab them.

    Megadrive:

Phantasy Star II, III & IV (All RPGs)
Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Shining Force II. (I currently have these for sale. *Shameless plug*)
    Landstalker
    Gunstar Heroes
    Toejam and Earl
    Alien Soldier

    Saturn:

    Shining Force III
    Dragon Force
    Panzer Dragoon Saga
    NiGHTs
    Guardian Heroes
    Shining the Holy Ark
    Mystaria

    Playstation (1):

    Suikoden I & II
    Vandal Hearts I & II
    Star Ocean
FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX (Surprising how much you can pay for these)
    Devil Dice
    Klonoa (IIRC)
Breath of Fire III & IV.

If you're into a specfic game type though, let me know and I'll recommend some stuff, both rare and common. I don't knwo much about the SNES though.
And I agree, this current gen is pretty poor. I have only 6 games on my xbox, and 2 of them are ready to be traded in.

i just picked up a megadrive on ebay (i never had one when they came out) and it came with a few games, inc. golden axe, which i remember from the arcades and my C64 back in the day, so that would have to be a must have. apart from that, ghosts n' goblins and the sequel are ones to look out for. i also loved turrican (which i had on C64 and Amiga) i don't know if it got a console release but it was a cracking game. apart from that, how about something like paperboy? an all-time arcade classic...

Sport games I can't really help you with much, as I don't "do" sports. However some good ones are:

    The ORIGINAL EA Hockey.
    Mutant League Football.
    Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe.
    Sidepocket.

Strategy is a tough genre to nail down on a 16-bit, but I'd recommend the Shining Force games, they're what is known as a Strategy RPG, whereby there is a story and plot like an RPG, but the gameplay is based upon movement on characters, much like chess. Howeevr each character is unique etc. Imagine D&D crossed with Chess. :)

    Good games then eh?

    Well, IMO, for Sega Megadrive:

    The above mentioned sport games
    Mega-lo-mania
    Gauntlet IV
    Psycho Pinball
Wonderboy in Monster World (Not Land. Monster Land on the MD was awful)
Gunstar Heroes (Best 2 player game ever on the MD, with the possible exception of TJ&E)
ToeJam and Earl (Not TJ&E2, just the first one)
Shining Force (I'm selling this BTW, in the classifieds here)
Phantasy Star IV (II and III aswell if you love RPGs)
    Landstalker
    The Immortal
    Flashback
    Ranger X
    Dune
    Gemfire

There's bound to be many many more though TBH.

Ah the Megadrive - a classic console if there ever was one and a console that i've never been without since the first import ones hit our shores in 1990 (if my memory serves).

Many classics have already been mentioned but here are some of my faves:

Fantasy Star IV - classic RPG action!

Outrun/Afterburner - good solid conversions although there are better ones on the DC, Saturn & Mame these days.

Gauntlet IV - The visuals lack the colour vibrancy of the arcade but apart from that this is the best version! Great multiplayer RPG game built in as well!

Roadblasters - Great conversion of an addictive game! Most stuff on the MD by Tengen (Hard Drivin, RoadBlasters, Gauntlet IV etc) are superb!

Golden Axe I & II - decent hack & slash action.

Streets of Rage 1, 2, 3 - Part 2 is the best (an absolute classic & probably the best side scrolling beat em up ever released) but all 3 are great games!

Super Shinobi (revenge of shinobi in UK) - Fantastic side scrolling platform/beat em up with great graphics!

Gun Star Heroes -Brilliant & innovative side scrolling shooter - an absolute must!

Thunderforce IV - one of the best side scrolling shooters ever released - fast, hard & action packed!

Hellfire - I liked this one when it came out - it's a little slow but is difficult and has an innovative thing (at the time) where you change the guns to fire forwards/backwards, up/down or at diagonals.

Tatsujin (Truxton in the UK) - another great shooter this time a vertical one. Very addictive & pertty hard - keeps you glued until the end though!

Forgotten Worlds - Great conversion of the coin of and another must buy for this console!

Sensible Soccer - great conversion of the Amiga classic!

Mega Bomberman - Brilliant version of the classic game - great fun for up to 8 players!

Yeah it's a pretty basic game put it's a 100% faithful conversion of the arcade though.

NHLPA Hockey - better than the original NHL Hockey although both are great games!

Flashback - another great Amiga conversion - superb game!

There are loads of other class games on this console which has a big software library! Enjoy!

If you want strategy 2 player, then Herzog Zwei is still ahead of it's time! (Megadrive)

    Extremely rare though.
