    Hi

I went to Nottingham Hifi today and viewed the Sony HS50 and I took my Sanyo Z1 to compare.

The Sony certainly had better contrast but it was nowhere near the step up I was expecting. We swapped back and forth between the two projectors and the difference was not that great.

Slightly better contrast on the Sony. In fact the most noticeable difference was a better level of detail on the Sony.

It may be that the Sony was not set up perfectly - it was in dynamic mode - I also saw cinema mode which simply was not bright enough. I have my Z1 tweaked pretty well so perhaps it had an advantage there but the Sony should wipe the floor with the Z1 (on paper at least).

I wanted to like the Sony and knew where I could find one in stock.

The image just did not have the punch I was expecting. I have previously seen the Optoma H30 and also did a side by side comparison - I thought the Optoma beat the Sanyo by a bigger margin and produced a punchier image.

So don`t necessarily be swept along - it shows the need to demo.

So I will be keeping my Z1 for the forseeable future - althougth I might look at an Optoma H57.

Anybody else managed to do a side by side comparison with the HS50 and anything else - did I get a fair impression ?

    Cheers

    Karl

    Same here !

After a lot of reading on this forum, I had narrowed my possible choice to either the Z3 or the HS-50,

I had a side by side demo of both and couldn't tell the difference between them.

In the end purchased the Z3 - the new version with the HDMI fixed.

Very impressed and no sign of any VB.

I think the automatic iris was set to off - I think I saw that in the menu just underneath the dynamic, cinema etc picture choices.

I have read in another thread that this makes the picture washed out which might account for the fact that the projectors looked similar when I was expecting a much bigger leap up.

I will call the store and ask them to check the menu setting.

Any views - would this setting make much of a difference ?

    Thanks.

Iris off gives a rather washed out image IMO, it's like having a light on in the room in my experience. The iris is what helps give the black level by cutting out the light I guess.
I have mine set to on all the time :)

    Steve

To take advantage of the dynamic iris, you should set it to AUTO, not ON.

Yes, my 2 1/2 yr old enjoys "Finding Nemo" at 6am. Toy Story 2 by 7.30am...

He has commented on the HS50 but would prefer I get an HD2+ DLP as he's not affected by rainbows....
