I am looking for a new amp and have a couple of questions you may be able to answer about the 505...
(a) what have you got connected to the amp?

(b) how have you got the other items connected

(c) if you have an HD source connected soley by HDMI are you getting sound through your speakers??

For Question (c) I have just been to my local dealer and he said that I would not get sound out of the speakers if my HD-E1 was connected to anything via HDMI unless it was one of the latest amps/receivers, would not notice much difference even with one of those and might aswell stick with optical for the audio then saying I could buy a better amp than the sherwood I have now connect via optical (like I already do) and hear much higher quality sound!!!

I thought it was BS

He does have an end of line Arcam AVR300 in that he is selling for £700 btw however I only go there to ask questions as everything they sell breaks down and is repackaged goods in the first place ( I am not the only customer who has found this)

sorry mate, i cant answer as yet, my tv only arrived yesterday evening and i have only just got round to connecting everything .. will let you know how i get on

hi ya,
I have a 505

a) Xbox ( old one ), Dvd player Hdmi + digial coaxial lead, vigin sky box ( NOT V+ )

b) Mixture of Hdmi, S- video , and composite.

C) to be clear I need a seprate audio cable ( either Digial coaxial or opical ) to use HDMI ( which you can match the ditial audio to the source )

It's a great buget amp though only slight complaint would be it doesn't convert betwen vido formats. I.e If you use s-video coming in, you need a s-video coming out, It will not cross over to composite out.

hmm he's actually pretty much on the money with that one. the 505 doesnt process audio over hdmi. to really get a feel for the differences hdmi audio and specifically LPCM brings, you need to be looking at THX ultra quality amps and suitable speakers to match. its true, optical will will do just as well in a majority of cases

If you have 5.1 analog outs,use them.Optical will only give you DTS or DD,none of the new sound formats.
