    No, not Freddy Kruger!
Well quite a while ago I got tired if near liquid sausages and see through bacon in the supermarkets (yes, in one packet I could see through one rasher to the next!) and looked around.
Found a farm shop which was better but still not quite right - pork sausages with that added smoky flavour, damp bacon (a sign of added water).
A neighbour two doors down mentioned a butcher 2-3 miles from me, three generations etc.
Went there a couple of days ago and the smoked streaked isn't damp, the smoked flavour is subtle because no added stuff is thrown in. It will take me a month or two to try all the sausages the make. :D
If you are in Bristol - Don Hayes, Staple hill.

Glad to see your supporting your local butcher's. My Mrs works for a meat wholesaler and it's very sad the amount of butchers that have closed over the years. IMO meat from a supermarket and a butchers does not compare.

Good tip for the bacon, will look out for that.

I use a couple of local butchers here & I am sure they are all top notch but will inspect there bacon tomorrow!

All supermarket meat is too lean now. All the steaks, even the strewing steak has no fat. No fat = no flavour. It's terrible.

Nice one Sniffer - others are welcome to supply info on good local butchers and others.
The more business they get the better.

We now use a local butcher, they have a large shop (size of a Tesco Local) and it's half the price of the supermarkets for most meat. For instance you get 5 kilo of chicken breast for £20 and it's not full of water, good stuff :)

Mines about a cut more than the supermarkets quality stuff. IE what you can buy sirloin would only buy you rump at my local butchers. And we are talking the 'tastes no different' stuff, so none of your rubbish. So he doesn't get my business now. I need it to be cheaper. Oh and used to love their sausages, but they are full of salt now.

We use a local butcher too. Great for getting advice on cuts of meat to use. Usually I use diced steak / stewing steak for stews, but recently tried a different and cheaper cut which, on the butcher's advice, turned out to be superb.

We love their homemade sausages, burgers and pork pies. It's also fantastic to ask for a steak at a particular thickness and have it cut there and then!

I will be going there to do some shopping tomorrow.

Friendly, family run, use local meat and always a pleasure to visit.

Deal is where I shop and it's no where near local to me, but worth it.

    We use these:

    Products - Mainstream Foods

They do individual orders not just wholesale, are cheaper than supermarkets and much nicer. The steaks are especially good.

Details of a good butcher in mid kent would be welcome especially for a decent bacon that we used to get from the local shop when I be young. My God even the milkman done great meat back then ( that doesn't sound quite right :p ) so great to see a local butcher thread.

I've been spending a bit of time in Louth recently. There are loads of fantastic butchers here but my favourite is this one. The pork pies, bacon and Lincolnshire sausages are superb!

also, if you buy a pack of chops etc from a supermarket (i.e. pack of 2) - the one that's under the label isn't half as good as the one you're able to see - both from the same cut of meat but one from the good end (for the want of a better word), and the other from the not so good end...
