I have been wanting to replace my annoying windows based pc for ages now. Tried linux but everything is just not built to work with each other and then having graphics card driver issues.

So I looked at macs, and since playing with them instore and seeing how easy everything works together was, i wanted one.

Liked the look of the new mac books but wanted fire wire for video editing options, and liked the back lit keyboard, and new track pad. But paying £1179 for a MB and still not having firewire was pushing me to pay £1320 (Comet) for the MBP 15.4". They had a old shape MBP on display too, and although the keys are not spaced out as much, and does not have the multi click pad it looked nice, and no glossy screen glare.

It was priced at £1174.46 and the spec is 2.5 Ghz 250Gig hard drive, 2 Gig ram, 512 Mb GeForce 8600M GT non glossy screen.

Anyway haggled as its getting discontinued and got another 30% off!!

So got my MBP, although the old model a decent spec for

    £822.12 :D

Not bad for a brand new MBP with life09 etc.

    Please tell me i'm right?!

Superb! You'll love it. There's a lot of hype around the the unibody MB and MBP (the latest) but there's not much different to yours - the GPU has changed and the trackpad has additional functionality but you got a bragain...

I am still using my single core (first intel) macbook pro, still superb.

Sure, LED screen is brighter, bigger HD and more ram, but this is still excellent.

    :)

You will love your one, without a doubt.

    What a bargain!!

They are VERY different in many ways: construction (machined from a slab of Aluminium, instead of reinforced, pressed Aluminium sheeting, therefore making the machine a LOT stronger and more aesthetically pleasing), Glass touchpad with integrated click (NO click button!) now with multi-touch gesture support, faster FSB, faster ram, faster processors, better battery life, DUAL GPUs (9400M and 9600M), Unibody has 3Gbps SATA whereas the earlier MBP had 1.5Gbps SATA... etc etc...

How far would Apple get if they said "We have a fantastic new Mac today... but it's not much different to yours!". OF COURSE it's different, but whether or not you can justify the superior build quality, better performance etc, is up to the individual.

Mac ignorants annoy me - please don't say stuff JUST to pacify someone making a purchase decision - there is very much a difference: Look here -->> http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html

Ignorant? The construction method was pioneered over a year ago in the Air. Did they make a big deal of it then? So why later? Perhaps to beef up the launch and differentiate the new offering? Steady on, that would be the sort of thing marketing guys get up to wouldn't it?

Faster everything? Well do computer companies ever revise kit and specs and use slower older components?

I love Apple products and marketing but you seem to be the more credulous of the two of us.

You said they're basically the same, which is untrue. I apologise for calling you ignorant, but the fact remains that you are grossly incorrect as re: specs. It's the whole "it'll do" attitude that is what sets Macs apart from the rest; PC users will never have the luxury of flawless, obsessive design, because of their creator's lazy, corporate ($)($) cash-register-eyed money machine attitude.

Anyhow, my time here is obviously being wasted - I didn't mean to cause offence, but inaccuracy is what feeds on the PeeCee buyers ignorance; we Mac users are a little better informed usually, as there isn't all the corporate crap to wade through, with extended model numbers, sub-model numbers, crazy and pointless revisions, BIOS updates... oh how very wearing it all is.

    Seeya! :).

My god your a serious chappy aren't you?

What do you do to relax, read published accounts of multinationals?

I have a 4MB RAM, soon to have a 4OOgb HD, 2.4 GHz processor for my white 2008 macbook which cost me with my improvements about £900. To get a similar spec on the new macbook I would have to spend about £400+ more, and all I would notice is a slight increase in speed and slightly better graphics. I dont care a monkeys about the track pad, the solid aluminium shell they are superfluous to me, and to be honest I like my white macbook.
The guy is happy with his buy so give it a rest please.

Can this be the end of this please shinybox has apologised to Tenex from what I read, if Tenex excepts the apology there is no need for anyone else to get involved and carry it on.

    Hi,

Thanks all for your advice over this. A month on now nearly from having my first Mac and I'm loving it. Just upgraded to ilife 09 and iworks etc, and everythign about it is easy and works. I have even pursuaded though it didnt take much, for two work colleagues to come over to the mac world after years of MS suffering :D They got the new imac 24'' and the other one a g5 imac to start with, as its mainily about the ease of use with these machines.

THe laptop is great, and I prefer the matt screen to the gloss, no reflections to speak of. Dont miss the click anywhere touch pad, as the MBP is so much bigger than my old toshiba one. Even sold my old toshiba laptop for £245 on ebay, so it brought the cost down even lower.

I didn't see any point in replying and drawing this out further.

I think the reply from tuscan_al is all that needs to be added - another new happy Mac user. Welcome aboard, hope to see you in here tuscan_al :smashin:
