I have so far spent the day evalulating this wonderful
machine.Hooked up via component on my panny 6
plasma the picture quality is outstanding. My cambridge
audio dvd57 in progressive scan compared to the sony
lacks clarity and detail, the picture on the sony is also
    more 3d like.

A huge bonus is the player acts as progessive scan
converter and sky digital via the machine in progressive
video mode(best chosen for sky)outshines my js
scart to vga adapter box by miles. The picture quality
    is just awesome.

Recording on to the hard drive ,the picture once again
in hq+ mode looks outstanding and indeed you can switch to progressive auto mode instead of video mode
for a picture that is even better than when watched.

Thats as far as i got so far ,i understand that some
people have complained about the fan noise but mine
was fine.I had a philips dvdr1000 before this and
this is a world away from a machine that gave me
nothing but trouble from day 1.

I intend to do some recordings next week and see
if the sections of a vhs tape record perfectly on this machine where they did not on my dvdr1000
causing the picture to slow down and speed up.

So far im really happy and payed under £600 for
    a multi region version.

A design limitation of the Philips DVD+RW machines means they lack time-base correctors hence the problems you had with the DVDR1000. Your new Sony is fully TBC equipped and therefore should not suffer the same problems.

Glad you happy with you new machine. :)
