Hi just orderd the Samsung PS42D4SXX which was in dixons on display, the mrs thought it looked great so I pulled out my visa and bought it.

Just wondering wot you boys thought this plasma if you have seen it in action B4.

I paid all togther £1999.99 as I paid for a glass stand that was displayed with it (£240) + I bought extra 5 years warranty for £200.

Will be using it for every possbile use >> DVD >> home cinema >> xbox, gamecube etc >> sky etc etc etc!

is it a good buy ?

    not being rude BUT:
    1:Do you read the forums?
2:Does the missus know anything about PQ/connections etc?
3:If its a pile of useless JUNK do you care?
4:What did you think of it?
5:Are you the sort of person who spend £2 GRAND on a 5 min demo in Dixons?

I have searched the forum B4 hand and couldt find a expert opinion.

thats why I asked the ? in the first place.

See this thread about my samsung experience:
    Samsung PS42V4SX
Your model is the same as mine but includes a VGA output.
My personal opionion was that the PQ was very good through component but there was always a bit of banding/solarization with panning images.

Read your link on the Samsung. Sorry to hear about your problems with it; we've had no problems (tempting fate?!) with the D4 so far and have had it for about 3 months and are very pleased with it. In my opinion, the picture quality is very good. This after returning an LG due to bad lip sync and polarisation. The difference was like night and day. Re the wall mount - how much are you looking for it and is it the original Samsung one?

Panny PWD6 £1500 (£500 left for stand black only left in stock, but no speakers)
Panny PW7 £1700( £300 left for stand available in silver or black again no speakers)
Panny you have to pay extra for the inputs you need (3 slots available)
LG PX11 £1400 Silver with speakers etc
NEC VR5 £1600 (silver/Dark grey all connections included but no speakers)
If you like the samsung stick with it..... reliability would be my fear but the warranty is going to sort that for 5 years... so dont stress it too much

The speakers on the Samsung are detachable - there are screws on each speaker and once unscrewed they lift off. In answer to the other question, no, it won't give you 7.1 surround sound. Sorry!

    I sort of did that.........
Bought a Hitachi 42PD4200 (exclusive to Richer Sounds) after looking at several high street shops. Afterwards I found this forum and after more research found that the screen wasnt as good as what the sales man said it was; had a lower resolution and wasnt HDTV ready. After speaking to the branch, I managed to get a different (more local) branch to take it back for a ful refund even though I had binned the packaging. Ok, the first guy was wrong, but excellent customer service on there part for taking it back. Now have a Pio 435FDE, much much better PQ and is HDMI, very happy with it

    Hi,

It seems my girlfriends parents have just gone out and bought a 42" Samsung PS42D4SXX from curry's (no research, no reviews!). From what I have seen of the PQ it looks pretty bad to me, both viewing sky and dvd through (assume) RGB scart. There seems to be lots of banding on the picture and it general plastic look to people. I'm not sure they have noticed or not, or if they are happy with it, I don't like to say anything when they have spent all that much.

I have no experience with Plasmas myself, the general theme in here seems to be to get a panny? Is the banding etc typical of all Plasmas, or is the Samsung not really a good model? I know pplz have had trouble with reliabilty on the Samsungs. From what I have seen, if it were me I would send it back.

    Andy

Some banding is pretty usual on any SD/ED screen, even panasonic, it's just a question of how much. Often it's compounded with other picture problems, and this is where you see the panasonics shine. Congrats on spending £200 on an extended warranty, they usually ask about £500 I thought. It's good value for £200

i brought the same plasma back in august, pq is excellent, sq is excellent, set up is very easy. i have the DNIe and DNR both on and i dont get the problem of plastic faces, as for the banding you get that with all plasmas but i hardly notice it on mine.
the only problem i have with this set is that last week it developed a loud buzzing noise from the rear which mastercare are coming out tomorrow, apart from that its a great buy

I bought ps42v4sx which I believe to be the same screen. The PQ was so bad it had to go back. The description by adh2020 is entirely accurate IMHO.
I replaced it with a pany viera and the PQ is in a different class.
I did post at length so you could find my views if you wanted.

I did go on record as saying ,PQwise, if I had to chose between the Samsung and my old Sony 32" crt I would keep the Sony. I still feel the same.

    Hmm,

Well from what I saw it was pretty clear, banding & solarization, however it's my first real experience of viewing on a Plasma T.V. I guess when viewing sky, the compression and low bit rates prob don't help? I think it's sometimes hard to be objective when you already own and have spent the money.

From reading a few threads, and looking about I think I will have a look at their setup next time I am round. Turning the sharpness down, and getting the contrast settings right might make a difference? I'll try the noise reduction stuff too. Also I guess Plasmas prob have a burn in period?

Anyway for all I know they may be totally happy with it. You can spend thousands on a T.V. but if your eye sights bad... ;)

I had the same experience as happyh, took the same action (although I went for a PW7 rather than a Viera), and got the same results. Different class of PQ.

I'd go so far as to say that I'd rather have kept my £200 Proline 28" TV than keep the Samsung!

adh2020. You can mess with settings for ages, I did! I even bought gold plated leads and a RGB/YUV convertor.
Managed to improve the PQ from Poo to Pants.

Make sure you turn off DNIe. That improves the PQ to Poo for a start.

Samsungs big issues is they are very overly bright when out of the box........ and prone to screen burn so being tooo bright when shipped and prone to burn = big trouble

Hi, I Had the Samsung from Currys. I pluged it all in and was very very disapointed. I have my Ntl Digital Cable box running RGB into my Sony HX900 recorder which then outputed a Component O/P so i was sure i had it connected the best possible way with quailty cables. The set suffered from Bad banding problems everyone had there faces mad up of about 4 shades. Dvd looked great but Any poorer Sources were useless. On TV there was very little detail and flesh tones made it unwatchable. Mine went stright back to currys i said the box was already open when it arrived and demanded a refund. I then went to richersounds and Purchased the Panny PWD6BX. I pluged that in after reading all the posts on hear hoping they were all right. Wow what a picture! Even on Ntl the picture quailty is excellent! I can not fault this screen at all. There is no sign of banding and the pictures are always real looking. If i was you i would not accept the Samsung and get a Panny.
It would be the best thing you could do with your money. :D
