Ive just bought myself an Optoma H78 projector and am now looking for a screen.

The screen is to be eight foot wide and manual. I also need it custom made as I need a large drop due to a high ceiling.

Ive narrowed it down to DRH screen vs Beamax. They are both of gain 1.
However, the Beamax is coming in at approx £100 dearer.

Does anyone think there will be a noticeable difference in picture quality between these 2 screens? If not, I will happily go for the DRH screen and put the £100 elsewhere.

Otherwise, if the Beamax will provide a better picture I dont mind spending the extra money.

Why does the H79 come with a free screen :D

Just a quick off topic, i have just seen your site, do you have this on demo or in stock? Is this going to replace the H78 in Europe?

No it's out in a couple of days, it will replace the H78 which I was told the last few were despatched with DC3 chips which I think did cause the initial confusion with a few people moaning on again.

So for the record the H79 DC3 will be available shortly and replaces the H78, there was no official release model of a H78 DC3 in Europe

You mean the H78 dc3 is being badged as H79 in the UK?

    What's the difference between our H79 and a US 78 DC3

Do we get the "hand picked optics"?

I thought Neil was a decent bloke, thats why I bought my H78 HD2+ from him.
But comments like that, really annoyed me!
The H78 was only announced 5 months ago and a few months later it was manufactured with superior parts and a lower retail price. (the lower price is not my problem, and I can accept that)

Now this! You have to admit what Optoma have done is frustrating.

Whilst its frustrating to see/hear about revisions and upgrade please keep in mind an awful lot of this is very incremental - were not talking groundbreaking.

Optoma/ThemeScene were pushed into a corner by Ti - the non DC3 version of the HD2+ chip is no longer available.

The projector market is mighty fast moving and whatever you buy today you can guarantee something with a higher spec will come along tomorrow and on pricing its simply down to which company has the biggest overdraft and the most bottle; a lot of this kit is being sold for below what it should reasonably be selling for as manufacturers jostle for market share.

From what I've seen with the HD2+ and HD2+ DC3 models you can sleep soundly - if you want an improvement in your system introduce a calibrated Lumagen or similar ahead of your H77; the difference in on-screen performance is far more pronounced.

The H77 and H78 are now no more and soon enough we'll have the H79 and soon enough someone will announce the Hxxx - an on and on...

    Best regards

    Joe

    Back on topic..... :D

I've been extremely pleased with both the service and the product from DRH, I would be surprised if the extra money was worth it. (£100 buys an awful lot of DVDs now..)

    Cheers

If you can stretch to a tab tensioned screen that would be my route.
I initially had a beamax pull down screen, but i encountered a few ripples.
I ended up buying a fixed frame screen from www.ellie.co.uk

Its a 1.2 gain matt white, but works nicely with my H78.

You can see a movie of it in action on their site. According to their sales staff, you can also buy a sample of the material for (U.S.)$150.

Of course, the actual screen will have you paying through the nose, as it's priced between $2000 and $3000 for the material alone.

I think optoma themselves do a screen material called Greywolf, and from what i have seen and heard the results are fantastic. Im not sure if the screen is limited only to the USA, which could pose a problem.

Other than that why not check out the Grandview screen range. Quality is excellent and even though my 8FT screen is not tab tensioned there are no ripules etc and it is bang on 16:9 (some screens can be a little out in the corners due to less than great assembling).
The picture from my old Sim2 300xtra was brilliant with this screen as some of the screen shots i have posted in other threads would show.

Justthekiddy, do you have any idea who are distributing these screens in the UK or any dealers that are selling them?
