Welcome to my thread on my first dedicated home cinema.
I haven't really got much experience with AV related things so everything is new and a learning curve. My home cinema watching has never consisted of more than a 32" TV with no separate speakers.
Mostly I watch films on my 27" iMac with Harman Kardon Soundsticks.

So last year we decided to convert our integral garage into a cinema room, with an area at the back for music related things (piano/guitars). We wanted to begin last summer but things got in the way, so everything has been delayed, until recently.
Builders start work Monday morning. I've started to receive the equipment although most deliveries will arrive next week.

    List of equipment:
    Optoma HD33 Projector
    Carada 96" Precision Fixed Screen
    Onkyo TX-NR616 Amp
    Wharfedale Diamond 10.5 Floorstanders
    Wharfedale Diamond 10.CM Centre
    Wharfedale Diamond 10.DFS Sides
    Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 Rears
    BK Monolith DF Sub
    Sky+HD (Sky Sports)
    PS3
    Xbox 360
    Apple TV3
    Logitech Harmony 900

So begins our journey to a home cinema!
First task was to turn this:
    Into this:

Updates should come thick and fast this week as there are a team of builders working on it.
    Can't wait!

Good luck with this one  Should be an interesting build. Hope you've figured a way to black out that sky light?

It may be better posted in the "Home Cinema Building DIY" thread as this one is mostly for completed rooms.

    Thanks.
The sky light will be going, as will the back door and side window. It's being gutted and completely redone.

Yeah I'm not sure what I've done but I've managed to balls up the threads. I'd posted this last year in DIY but couldn't find the thread (because I was searching in gallery). I've asked for the mods assistance

Well a team of builders are now in and they've already made good progress given they've only been here a few hours. I'll post some pictures tonight of the changes, but in the mean time, here is my growing pile of stuff.

Amp, Screen, Floorstanders and cabling are due to arrive any day.
    Picking up projector this afternoon.

They are, although I'm new to all this so I don't have anything to compare, however, I had a 2D demo and thought it was incredible. I've also been unimpressed with 3D at the cinema, but again, the demo just blew me away.

Coming along I see, tbh if it was me I'd have to wait until the build was nearly done before buying all the kit. Would be just to excited and want to set it all up, even in a building site :D

Mark any chance you can get this moved into the "Home Cinema Building DIY" thread. Would probably get more views there?

    Day Two
Decent progress again today, timber in for walls and ceiling. You can't see behind me but the window is beginning to be blocked up.

Very fun day for deliveries though, look what I added to my pile!

And my screen came! Ordered on Thursday night, came from the US and arrived this morning. Well done Fedex.

I ordered everything partly because I'm new at this, so wanted everything in once place so I can make sure everything works and partly because it should be done in about a week and a half and I want to watch a film in it as soon as possible :D
I'll admit to trying out the projector on my lounge wall, however that was in the interest of 'testing'

    Day Four
Soundproofing in on the side wall but forgot to take a picture while it was light. Roofers come tomorrow and front wall starts being knocked out.
Mark Grant HDMI cable arrived, tested with Amp and Projector in my bedroom, looks excellent.
    Rear speaker mounts arrived.
More Van Damme 2.5mm cabling arrived (underestimated how much I'd need)

Here's a new plan of how it should look in the end. (Sortof to scale)

I was very tempted in 7.1 but can't see a way of mounting rear surrounds.
And thanks for the nice comments :)

Hey great plan :) Looking forward to seeing how this will turn out! :)

With regards to your 7.1 issue have you thought about either ceiling mounted speakers? or maybe even using dipole speakers to spread out the sound at the back for a less directional approach?

Oh you may find if you put the poster fames up that you'll get lots of refections from the pj screen. Be careful how close you put them to the screen, I would'nt go any closer than 1.5m. I have a lot of frames in my room but I'm now removing them to increase the PQ. Anyway its looking good so far :smashin:

    Thanks for the comments.
I'll have to look at where to mount the posters once the screen is up, it won't be too much hassle moving them further down the wall. I think I got them from Next or Amazon.
What would be the recommended rear speaker for 7.1? I have the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 that I was going to mount at the rear side, would they be better suited behind?

How did you mount the SR? I'd need mine coming from the ceiling.

Should see some serious progress next week.

Oh, ordered the seating today. Two single recliners and a three seater as seen in the mockup.

will look forward to seeing the pics...

have to say though, i think you should put the sofa at the back and the 2 recliners at the front but that maybe just my mind going back to my teenage years and telling me that you should cuddle up on the back seat... :D

    Looking Good

where did you get the speaker cable from and what gauge did you use ? did you use conduit or not bother seeing how it's going behind the board ?

    cheers

I was tempted in the sofa at the back, but as that will be my seat, I wanted my own recliner. I can always swap them around.
Speaker cable was Blue Van Damme 2.5mm and no it hasn't gone in conduit as it's behind the board, however the HDMI will be in a tube, as that's more likely to break out of the two.

    Day Six
Side window blocked up, already looks about 50% darker.

This is the front of the garage. We're having a porch extension, so the garage is coming out another two foot, in line with the grey wall on the right side.

    From the otherside
    [IMG]

And this is where the AV cupboard will be, with everything hidden. Lovely.
