    Hello there,

I have an alarm system fitted to the house, which connects to our phone line. I want to divert the route of the phone line so I cut the plastic jack ends off the alarm line and a telephone extension cable so I could feed it through a hole I drilled in a cross member in a partition wall.

At this point I noticed that 1. the copper cores are strands rather than solid 2. the cores are thin so twisting them together to join is out of the question and 3. the alarm line has four cores and the telephone extension has two.

Can someone please tell me how I get around the first two hurdles and whether the third point is going to be an issue?[IMG]

Solder and heat shrink to do the job properly.

Telephone jelly connectors will do the job fine seen them used on a few jobs.

    2 WIRE TELEPHONE JELLY CRIMPS 8A TELECOM CONNECTOR x 100 | eBay

Can't really help with the wiring but was the alarm working fine of the extension lead before you mullered it? if so connecting the two same colours back together should work or failing that a good old search of google will be your best bet.

Google is how I arrived at these forums, I hadn't tried the extension lead with the original cable for the alarm prior to cutting so I don't know whether it requires all four cores.

Haven't dealt with alarms in years, but i suspect that 2 cores will be for an alarm signal and 2 cores for an anti-tamper circuit, the wiring instructions for the alarm panel should confirm this.

If you don't own a soldering iron. Quick and dirty, twist the wires together and put a big gob of Araldite over the connections.

After receiving your replies I have decided to get a much longer 4 core alarm system cable, the correct terminals and I already have a crimping tool. Thank you for your help.
