John Lewis Plasmas

I know John Lewis often market their “Never knowingly undersold” slogan and that they give away 5 year guarantees on TVs. My questions are:

Will they match e-tailers such as Nexnix?

Does the 5 yr guarantee apply to Plasmas? Is it any good?

I’m thinking of buying from them but would appreciate any advice you can offer. Many Thanks

Firstly they'll only price match items they hold as 'normal' stock. If they have to order an item for you specially, they won't price match.

Second, they only class as a 'TV' any screen that is capable of receiving terrestrial signals through a supplied analogue tuner (either internal or in a media box), and only provide the 5 year guarantee on 'TVs'. If you order a plasma monitor from them then (a Pioneer MXE for instance, or Hitachi PD5100), it won't come with the warantee.

Third they'll only price match retailers with a shop front, selling the same product (the Pioneer 434 they supply for instance has the speakers included, so you'd have to find a store doing the same thing).

If you can convince them that nexnix is a shop you can go to and buy a plasma over the counter, they'll price match. If not, they won't.

Fourth, they only price match competitors with screens in stock at the time they call.

That's just my experience of course, and apparently some stores are more flexible than others.

i am thinking of doing the same. They will give you a 5 year warranty on a plasma "tv" as i asked them the other day. i was quite surprised at that - they even suggested that if it runs out of "gas" they could deal with that too which i took with a hefty pinch of salt. Are you thinking of using Oxford Street's John Lewis as thats where i will be going. you could try and get a price from prcdirect or other similar "discount" type stores and see what JL can do for you

keep us informed if you don't mind

good luck

Not true on the monitor v's TV warranty... JL Watford will give the 5 year warranty on the Panasonic consumer monitors and will price match Hi-Spek in St. Albans...

Agree they must be in stock when they make the call...

Thanks guys.

Bit disappointed as i wanted the PWD6, but the idea of a 5 year guarantee makes is very appealing considering an extended warranty policy may be upwards of £300!

I will of course keep you updated. Thanks again

janmolby,
JL do stock the PWD6, its just that they sell it with the tuner/media box.
Find a retailer who sells it with the media box and get JL to match it.

I haven't ordered my plasma through JL Watford, however I've price matched TV's with Hi-Spek in the past... JL Watford also do the 50" Panasonic D6 monitor and it's avaialble with the 5 year warranty without the tuner box...

I assume it's branch policy, I've not got a contact name however the person I have dealt with appears to be quite senior, is late twenties/early thirties with light brown hair... Not much help if you intend to phone...

I have price matched a load of plasmas (keep changing my mind on model/new releases) recently at JL at some of the London branches as well as the 17" JVC LCDs and it is not straightforward. They are increasingly physically visiting the stores, particularly those they know are borderline. They wouldnt match nexnix - it has to be a store with the price you are trying to get on display. The interesting thing is they have set up the rules so that they can avoid having to match on most occassions. I was also told on one occassion that the Plasma price match policy is "under review". Chopping upto £2000 off a price clearly upsets someone. "Never knowingly undersold" is not true.

So in summary, some of the shops they will price match:

Crampton & Moore (Sheffield) - sometimes has different shop prices however
Richer Sounds (Many branches) - make sure you check that its on display or they wont match it and send them to that specific branch
HiSpek (St Albans) - Watford best for this one
Sound & Vision (Farnworth)
The obvious retailers eg Selfridges, Comet, Currys etc (not that you'll find a deal)

They will not price match (in my experience)

Any online only retailer

The London branches and Watford are well versed in Plasma/AV price matching eg they know the stores you are talking about if you call. Hope this is helpful.

Redface you seem to have had quite a bit of experience with this!!

What if i have managed to bargain with the management of a Richer Sounds and got a really good price. Are you saying that if i referred JL to the manager of that store, they would not match it?

All these barriers they are putting up makes me feel like they have bitten off more than they can chew!

Just do what I did.

Buy it from John Lewis with a Barclaycard, and then get Barclaycard to price match against the cheapest internet retailer you can find.

i am about to get my first credit card; is it only barclaycard who can pricematch or are there others (mine will be with Alliance & Leicester)

cheers

Squiffy,

Did you actually get barclaycard to do the pricematch? Just curious because they will usually only do it if it's exactly the same deal. No-one else offers those 5 year warranties thrown into the price that JL do. This makes it difficult to get a like for like price comparison.

I've often found that such price matches are really little more than a gimmick and most of the time it's possible for the card co to wrangle out of it in such a way that they never have to stump up the cash.

It would certainly be good to hear of somebody who has had a more positive experience, and more to the point how you went about achieving it.

I was also under the impression that Barclaycard wont do pricematching where JL are involved. Confirmation would be great. Re Richer Sounds. My experience is they wouldnt price match.

I think Barclaycard terms do specify that they will only match in the absence of a retailers own price match policy - as JL have such a policy there are definite grounds for Barclaycard to refuse.

No Barclaycard will still price match if the shop has a price match policy its just you need to try it first.

So if i was to try and pricematch with John Lewis with HiSpek, for example, and this brought the price down to £2500 and bought the panel for that amount, and then pricematched it with Barclays because Nexnix are doing it for £2300, would BC pay me the £200?

I hope that makes sense. :zonked:

Guy at JL Southampton told me they would price match a panny plasma offered at Richer Sounds for a couple of grand less.

Went back in the next day and spoke to another guy to confirm, again, was told they definatly would price match if Richer Sounds had the plasma in stock.

Was asked to fill out a form and await a phonecall. Few days later that phonecall came, she told me that they would not be prepared to price match Richer Sounds, regardless of stock.

What a complete waste of time John Lewis are. Just to confirm, John Lewis clearly do as they please, there is no 'set-in-stone' price match policy.
