My Mum has just moved house and I'm looking to set up her phone line and broadband and found John Lewis offering unlimited broadband and phone line for £20 a month for 12 months.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of using John Lewis for this.

I'm not too bothered about Broadband speed as she will only use it for facebook and emails.

      thanks

Looks a decent deal with evening & weekend calls included. It's actually Plusnet, who were OK in the short time I was with them. I guess it depends how many extra layers JL add to the CS process should a fault occur?

There's also potentially £50.50 cash back available through topcashback.co.uk.

If it is just ADSL speed she needs then it's an ok deal. If however like mine, my son goes around and she then needed a box for streaming TV, YouTube and then facebook like with family abroad, it soon ran out of fun, I ended up giving her the FTTC :)

She'll only ever need it for basic surfing.
she has freeview TV build in to her TV but I may look at buying a freeview box that can record TV at some point.
Any recommendations in that area would be greatly appreciated

I used John Lewis BB for a year. It was fine. You're put through to the Plusnet contact center if you need to speak to anyone, so the service is no different to buying from them direct.

As always, depends on budget. The BT Youview boxes are cheap used (often actually unused/unwanted) & are made by Humax. Also gives access to catchup services from the EPG.

Is it just connected via a normal TV ariel and broadband lead?
And I assume there are no monthly subs to pay?

      Correct.

The interface has changed completely since that review (which I haven't read) but the only potential down side is that the EPG may list the BT channels delivered by broadband, even though they're unavailable. But they'll be in high numbers way above Freeview so easily ignored.

That sounds perfect for my Mum. I've already found a couple on eBay that may be worth bidding for.
      Thanks :)

Do make sure you go for the BT Youview box and not the cheaper Talktalk ones as they are terrible by comparison. Might be worth putting a wanted thread in the classifieds on here, that's how I got one for my mum at a good price.

Does it fall under their ‘never knowingly undersold’ policy?

      Cheers,

I doubt it as you can't buy "John Lewis brand broadband" elsewhere. :D

Sounds like you can buy it from Plusnet :)

PlusNet: How can I help you?
Me: I'd like to buy John Lewis Broadband.
      PlusNet: We don't sell that
      Me: Bugger...

But we do sell something almost exactly the same for £18.99.

Unlimited Broadband & Phone - Fast, cheap & reliable | Plusnet

And I’m still ‘stuck’ on Sky because every year I call them and say “look what PlusNet are doing” and Sky don’t just beat the deal they absolutely smash it so that I would be silly to leave.

Think I’ve tried three times now to move to PlusNet and failed.

      Cheers,

      Nigel

Not the point though is it? John Lewis won't price match something "almost" exactly the same will they?

I know, I agree with you, just playing.

The JL “Never Knowingly Unsold” is the high street’s biggest fib anyway.

      Cheers,

      Nigel
