Picked this up last night, and whilst it's definitely cheesy, I like it.

Sort of a Rolling Stones/Glam Rock influence going on, but it's better than that description! Has anyone else heard this?

Then of course it begs the question...."how did you get to hear about Jet ?", because Jet get airplay, bands with more to offer lose out, because they dont fit with the media moguls ideas of 'commercial music'. In the end we lose out. Stroll down any high street and look at what commercialism has done for choice, specialist independent shops are all but dead.

Music is one of the few freedoms of expression. Im not in the habit of treading on other peoples choices, but, just take a few moments to think about how bands like Jet are rammed down your throat and who is doing that and why.

If you eat a Big Mac everyday, drink alchopops and are happy making Next or Top Man your only choice in clothing..........then it makes no odds, either way.

Me, I like choice, so from my point of view, if Jets the sort of music that you like, who am I to tell you different...........just pause for a few moments and consider.

Mind you, I liked Sweet, Wizard and Slade.......infact  I still do

i hear what you're saying but im firmly in the "if you like it, you like it, to hell with what everyone else thinks" camp.

I heard Jet first on 6music (I don't listen to a lot else).

I'm intrigued as to where I'm meant to find out about more obscure music. I've listened to a few suggested albums on here, and hated a few of them (what the hell was 'something or other in the crematoria' all about?)

Are Jet getting played on other radio stations?

I guess in future I'll know that any music that gets played on the radio is by definition a sell out, and immediately take it off my shopping list...

i somehow found myself with a copy of this cd, (meaning an original, not an illegal copy;) and the first thing i thought was, "hmm, it sounds right, good guitar sounds, decent production, but, y'know, about as original as a photocopy..." and we all know how a photocopy degrades from the original. maybe a third generation cassette copy is the right way to listen to this band?
oh, and it's nice to see australians do have irony, this band slagging d.j.s for playing other people's music! yes, i know The Darkness are hardly original, but at least they're fun

I love this album. Along with the Darkness it's my most played purchase of the last year.

First came across them on Soccer AM of all places. They were guests in the studio and they played a clip from the "rollover DJ" video. I guess I like it because it reminds me of a lot of some of my favourites - AC/DC, Stones, Oasis and the like. Not an ounce of originality in the whole thing but then music (like fashion) is cyclical and there's very little truly innovative stuff offered to John Q Public by the mainstream media. You have to do your own detective work and take a chance occasionally. You'll buy some duffers but that's why God invented ebay.

I assume you're referring to the Mars Volta album - Jazz rock!

I will take that as sarcasm................but , to answer the implied question. No, not everything is a sell out, but IMO groups like Jet are promoted because they fill a commercial void. The promotion is usually by magazines such as NME and then filters through to commercial radio. Thats not to say there isnt decent bands being promoted, but since the great 'Nirvana fiasco' (where it was realised that some underground groups could make it to the big time), many groups have been more carefuly marketed to reach a target segment.

So, separate the wheat from the chaff. If a band sounds like they are trying to be all things to all people, then it might be worth questioning their worth in the long term. Good music is usually for keeps and makes you seek out the CD time and time again throughout the years.

How do you find the obscure stuff ? well if you like Jet, then you recognise their influences...........back track to where the influences came from (because they are major influences its fairly easy to determine the bands whos music managed to do this). Follow the family trees back and forward, note the musicians that made it happen and the musicians still involved. A bit of research will reveal a whole raft of new music.

I just dont happen to rate Jet very highly, if others think they are great thats OK by me.

    addendum to my last post:

'Culture' is everything we don't have to do.

Culture consists of the gratuitous stylistic extras that we add to the things we do have to do.

You have to eat, but you don't have to decorate elaborately prepared curries with silver leaf. You have to move around, but you don't have to dance.

Culture is a biological drive for humans. It is not something that we just add on at the end, after we've dealt with all those survival problems, but something we keep doing all the time.

    - Brian Eno

I recognise Jet's influences, and I actually prefer them to the Stones and Oasis...

I don't care if they're around for ever or not, I just rate this album. It's a tight band playing rock music like it should be played. They sound like they're enjoying it.

Anyway, I don't listen to commercial radio, and I treat the music press with utter disdain. A complete waste of paper, as far as I'm concerned.

I like the Jet album too, ok i agree that it's not original and sounds like many bands of yesterday.

But it's gotta be different from the rest of the cheesy waffle that get's played on most radio stations, it's a shame we don't get a choice of radio like we do on the net when your in the car.

Jet do get played a lot on Virgin, but then so do many bands like the "Ret Hot Chilli Peppers". But then i do like them a lot too.

I guess without stations like 6music on freeview, we would miss out on lot's of good quality music out there, that wasn't played by the popular stations.

    Just my thoughts............

    Cheers
