Bit of advice required for prospective DSLR purchase
Was going to get Canon 350 with 18-55 lens kit for 649 but Jessops are now doing a bundle for 695 with the USM version of the lens and bag. Is the 50 quid worth the extra expense, would like to have quick autofocussing but not sure if the expense of extra 50 quid would be worth it and if it would be alot quicker at autofocusing. Im not really worried about the usm being quieter. The other major factor appart from the extra cash is that the bundle only comes with the silver body, I know that this wont have any bearing on the quality of the photos, but the black body IMO is so much better looking!!
    cheers

If its anything like Nikons lenses, the USM one should be a lot quicker focussing.

But I'll defer to Canon owners....?

IIRC this is a "lesser" version of the USM. I'm pretty sure I saw mention of this elsewhere and that it's a bit of a misnomer.

Personally I'd avoid the silver body - I think the black body might be worth more as a second-hand body.

I actually find the 18-55 kit lens (non-usm) fast enough at focusing in all the cases I've used it. I don't think you would really notice much improvement with the USM version of this lens. The non-usm kit lens is acceptably quiet for me too.

I also had a deal from Jessops when I bought my 300D, included a hard case. I soon found this case to be redundant because:
    1. You have to keep removing the crew on bit every time you want to access the CF card or battery
    2. You can't use it with bigger lenses and believe me it won't be long before you acquire them

Are they offering other deals that don't include the 18-55 kit lens? I think you'll outgrow this fast and you may want to opt for another starter lens instead eg 28-135 IS USM or 17-85 EF-S

    thanks for all the advice,

Dood. I have noticed a few other deals going around now with the 17-85 USM IS lens but these are around 1100, too much for me
    cheers

    I'll second that.

I agree, I think the black body is nicer.

The silver lens is micro-usm not a full-on ring usm. I bought my 350d exactly two weeks ago and tried both the black and silver. There was no difference to me in the focussing speed. The silver looked a bit pants when compared to the black.

I have no regrets with the black one, in fact I'm in love.

The bag to have is the hama camera rucsac IHMO.
