I've just been reading some of the glowing reviews for 'JCVD' (84% at RT.com) and although I'm not really a VD fan, I rather fancy giving it a go. Have any of the forum regulars picked this up yet and if so, thoughts on the flick and disc?

    I'd like to know also.
JCVD movies were always guaranteed to be weak, plot wise.

It is not a typical film by him though, if you are expecting mental fights then you are in for a shock, I cannot really say much without giving too much away, I thought it was a very good self mocking/loathing piece of work though.

Picture wise it has a bit of an yellow tint to it, making it almost dream like, which some may complain about.

There isn't too much going on with the sound either, apart from a couple of excellent soundtrack moments.

It surprised me in the fact that it wasn't really an action film but still surprised me in it's quality both style wise and it's main star.

I bought this on impulse. I find his films very hit and miss. As Craigy said this is not his usual style and you can't really say why without giving it away. I thought it was his best film in years. Be warned it is mainly in French and the subtitles are a bit odd at times.

    Cheers

Cracking film and a cracking disc. Some might be put off by the subs being non-removable, but they look like player generated subs anyway,(I have subtitle OCD and these didn't bother me). A nice Dolby TrueHD soundtrack and a decent PQ. Some have complained about the PQ and have missed the point. It looks exactly like the cinema print I saw last year. Extras are in PAL for purchasers with a US machine.

His next film "The Eagle Path" is really getting some good reviews too. He's Directing, Starring and Producing it.

Sadly, he has just been forced to star in Universal Soldier sequel with Lundgren too

Was a good watch, Enjoyed the film. And yes, the English subs aren't quite accurate sometimes.

But if you understand french, it's a good one:smashin:

I liked this film. I didn't watch the bluray though.

I thought it was put together well and was very interesting. I like the way the audience was deceived early on and I howled for ages during the 'cigarette scene' even though I knew what was about to happen.

I found his monolgue a bit weird but equally quite moving.

I think that people should know though that it is a foreign film so it will be subtitled and if they are expecting Jean Claude to be kickboxing everyone in his way then they are going to be disappointed.

The UK box artwork for this is pretty dishonest. It's stupid and counterproductive to sell this like it's a straight to video Van Damme flick. You put off people who might enjoy it and attract people who won't. I think HMV and Blockbuster are going to see an unusual amount of people demanding their money back.

The last time I saw a film so misadvertised was a quirky independent comedy called The Tao Of Steve which EiV put out looking like Porky's 4 with a couple of busty models on the cover.

You mean there is no Van Dam doing the Splits (its in his contract for there to be a scene written into every film.;))

Totally agree, the front has explosions and helicopters while the back shows him with a gun to someones head and another image of him doing one of his jumping kicks to the head . Personally i expected this to be an action packed masterpiece simply because ive read comments like "Van Dammes best film for 15 years" and "Van Damme is back"..... van damme is back  back as what?
I think i was just totally shocked to find i was watching a foreign film about
a couple of muppets robbing a post office that van damme happened to walk into
, i just dont like the way it has been advertised, in fact i was really mad by the time it had finished.

It'd be an idea to spoiler your last post as not everyone will have seen it. You've given away a huge part of the plot.
