JBL BAR 9.1 Soundbar Review & Comments

I was between this and the Vizio. This looks fantastic but I went for the Vizio in the end. The price, and lack of channel adjustment were the big factors. I usually need to up the centre to get clearer vocals at lower volumes. And the price was too close to the Q90r. Which I would definitely look to get for around a thousand at some point. Primarily because the bar is so much wider giving better stereo separation. That should be a given at this price point.
In regards to the wireless technology, it's great but I would like them to apply this to ceiling speakers. Have some brackets that attach the the ceiling that rechargeable speakers can clip in and out of. Wiring the ceiling is a no go for most people, this would solve that problem.
I don't know about the "...wider giving better stereo separation..." I had long ago played with a spacial processor that worked better the closer the speakers were together - They emphasized this in the User manual. When close together you have a "phased array" which can effectively beam sound in different directions. With all this advanced sound processing these days, I would suspect they are playing some serious processing "games" to get the front channels right.

Congratulations, at that price I'd have found it very difficult to pass by myself even though I'm very close to grabbing a Sonos Arc when they come back in to stock at JL.

It's Mediamarkt in Austria and Germany too as I lived out there for a few years up until 20016 and still get emails from them now occasionally, just checked the German site and it's 1111€ on there so you've got a proper good deal there, enjoy
To be fair, they also have the LG SN11RG at 1099€ which is at this price tag quite crazy. I just cannot afford the extra 200, but i am fairly sure others will pull the trigger.

What 30% off deal is available please?
Currys have 30% off the bar if bought with any TV. As far as I know, this is valid with the cheapest TVs there so you could save about £200 off the price of the bar - or get a decent TV with the deal and flog it to help balance the books.

Good idea. If you were planning on getting this bar anyway then may as well buy any TV with it! Cheers.

Does anyone know where you can buy this in the UK currently other than Curry? Seems to not be sold by anyone else! Is this an indicator of quality or just that it is too new?

Released mid-pandemic and they're struggling to keep stock for their own web sales. Production levels will be way down on what theyd like/normal level. I'd be surprised if this didnt appear on the likes of RS in time

JBL direct though when I looked earlier it was now available for back order for mid July delivery @£999. Now if you know someone who has access to Unidays then you can get a 20% discount as well. The advantage of direct is 30 day return policy. Curry's are Notably difficult to deal with on returns.

Is it me or has the world gone crazy when a £900!! Soundbar is considered 'Good value'

It's a flipping soundbar! What exactly goes into it that makes it so expensive?
I bet the manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank
I'm with you on that one mate, for me £500 would be a maximum for this pleasure. On the other hand there must be many who have lots of money and they are willing to spend it on expensive toys so congrats to them.

Thanks for the review @Steve Withers just took delivery of this and it’s a huge step up from my previous Sonos 5.1 system particularly from a surround/immersion standpoint.

Out of curiosity how far from your seating position did you test the rears? I’ve got them about 5/6ft from where I sit but the instruction manual seems to suggest putting them almost on the back of the sofa. Curious to get your thoughts.

Mine are about 5/6ft behind me and they're great! I can't have then directly behind me as it's a walkway to the back door (annoys me having a back door in the living room!).

Yes I’ve not got any complaints with how they sound where they are just wondering if they’d be better closer/designed to be used closer to be honest.

If I could get mine closer I would. I'd be curious to know as well if the sound envelops you more if they were closer?

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I can put them on back of my sofa if that’s how it’s designed. I’ve got the rears calibrated for their current position but would like to know if I can get more out of them

Just wanted to write some initial thoughts on the JBL 9.1 given that I have had it setup a couple of days now.

Design:
It's not going to win any awards but looks good, it feels very solid and sturdy, as does the magnet connection to attach the rears - very solid.

Setup:
Very easy with google home app, it found the soundbar straight away and followed the instructions on the google home app.

Calibration:
Very straight forward, 5 mins to do.

Usage:
Very simple to use. My TV remote controls the sound and I like the fact you simply choose a 1-5 for Bass, or a 1-5 for Atmos. To me this simplicity makes sense for folks buying soundbars will prefer that kind of ease of use.

Sound:
My TV does not have eARC but it does pass through DD+ which I believe is enough to get Atmos. The soundbar shows as "dolby surround" on its screen.
The bass is very loud and I found the 3 setting to be fine.
I tested a couple of the Dolby Atmos demos (amaze) and it sounds awesome - you do feel enveloped by sound and its very impressive.
I tested the ready player one race scene, the opening scene from Unbroken, and the initial chase in Mad Max Fury Rd and it sounds simply awesome (all streaming from Netflix, Amazon Prime). The speakers all work together and its very cinematic.

One of my biggest gripes in the past I have is that the centre channel can be too low during spoken scenes, I have not noticed that yet with the JBL, but I would need to test it more but so far so good.

Overall I am very happy, the wireless rears are a great idea and work great. I can't say the price of £899 is worth it, thats subjective - but i got the 30% off with a TV deal at currys, and to my mind that was 100% worth it.

Regarding the Curry's offer

The above is the cheapest TV that will activate the offer code (£50). It's not a TV.... But the offer works if you add it with the soundbar and apply the code.

Quidco are also offering the 15% off JBL soundboard and a £10 bonus for spending over £100.... Although the t&c's suggest you may not get any cashback due to the discount code.

Can’t believe I missed the 15% TopCashback :( I did however get it for £678 including the Samsung Bezel which I don’t need.

Im after a bit of advice for connecting it as LG aren’t supporting earc on the LG C8. Am I better off connecting all inputs to the TV and then the tv to the bar via arc or should I use the single input on the bar for the Nvidia shield for the best sound (although I have the previous version of the Shield do not even sure if that supports Atmos).

Well that beats any cashback! And you could probably sell that on eBay for more when it's not on sale.

I'm tempted with the JBL now, I was leaning more to the Canton Soundbar 10, has anyone compared the 2? Although there's no stock anywhere near me!

Does anyone know how it can be wall mounted? I can't see any screw holes on the back so presume it needs brackets under it? Also, can the rears be wall mounted?

From the review if that helps:
there’s also a template and wall mounts for the soundbar, along with mounts for the rear speakers that you can hook them on to when they’re in use and unhook them when you want to recharge them
