It is not very often that I get excited by DVD packaging, back in the days of LP and Laserdisc it used to mean quite a bit to collectors to have nice artwork, but in these days of DVD, we very rarely get artwork which is good.

I think this is another reason why importing from Japan pays off in collectability stakes. Today I recieved the Japanese R2 edition of Black Hawk Down for review thanks to www.cdjapan.co.jp and was knocked out by the packaging used. This edition has dts sound like the Norway edition of the disc, but every edition I have seen, bar the 3 disc us version, has had very lame artwork and comes in the standard amaray packaging.

This edition is in a cardboard sleeze with a pull out digipak containing the disc and foldout booklet. and it looks brilliant.

    Here is the front and back of the sleeve;

Excuse the poor scans, but you get the idea. It's just a pity the scans don't give the sheer glossy effect that holding this does.

The film won an oscar for sound design, yet is only available in dts in northern Europe and in Japan.
I should have the disc reviewed very soon for you.

Hey guess what? I don't have a credit card either. Sorry I can't help you out here, but they do accept international money transfers, you could try that.

Wasn't overly impressed with this film when I saw it at the cinema, found it hard to follow the characters & thus unenvolving.
However I got the US 3 disc version for the historical stuff & after rewatching the movie three or four times since I've changed my mind, I really rate it, favourite disc for a long while.
Package looks very similar to THX 1138 Japanese version.

    Cheers, Paul

I love it when they give u quality packaging with the films and the best i have which stand out are

Pearl Harbor the 4 disc directors cut ....... superb packaging
Lord Of The Rings 4 disc ...... equally superb
Tombstone 2 disc vista series .... nice packaging
True Romance 2 disc region 1 ..... nice packaging
Dances With Wolves 4 hour region 1 version .... very nice but the japanese edition will be even better.
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves 2 disc region 1 .... also nice

Not keen on the ice pick region 1 Basic Instinct packaging or the Total Recall tinned box

I would love to see more reviews of discs which have been given the superbit treatment or the DTS treatment in Japan and Asia which arent available in the Uk or America, hope you review the Dances With Wolves 4 disc japanese set and i recommend Cutthroat Island DTS from japan which i recently bought, its anamorphic and sounds great and looks almost as good.

I just ordered it too. I doubt in a way that the pic will benefit too much from superbit as much of it is intentionally grainy anyway.

Although I'm firmly in the camp of dts is NOT superior to Dolby Digital, I do[/] think the R3 Dolby Digital soundtrack is pretty weak. hoping that the dts will be closer to how I remember it in the cinema.

The packaging for my Limited Edition 'Book Of The Dead' version of 'The Evil Dead' was simply superb...

anybody else had experience with it??

If not the casework is designed to resemble the Necronomicon from the movie - and strangely enough it feels as if it were made from human flesh (I've had many people immediately throw the case as soon as they've touched it simply because it's made them feel sick)...

Inside it contains pages written & designed by Tom Sullivan which include notes etc, which is supposed to be written in an evil ancient language (but if you read carefully enough, it's actually in hyped-up-english).

There's also a full colour booklet included charting the history of the movie & it's rise to success...

Then of course the DVD, which is superbly presented with a wealth of brilliant features!

    *takes a breather*
