Sky have won the rights to show all 007 movies for an entire year and will launch a dedicated movie channel to do so (Sky Movies 007 HD). It will show them on loop over 24 hours for a month.

    Starts October 5th

Pardon? This is just daft. You can't have an entire channel on one character alone.

I'm not a big fan, but I can see why they'd want to "cash in" on the 50th anniversary.

At most there's around 23, or thereabouts, films. How do you run an entire channel on so little input?

Probably better of getting the box set on blue-ray.

Play.com - Buy online at Play.com and read reviews. Free delivery to UK and Europe!

All the Bonds. All the girls. All the action. All in high-definition. That's the promise from MGM Studios and Twentieth Century Fox to mark 007's 50th anniversary with the release of the mammoth 23-disc Bond 50 Collection, showcasing all 22 Bond films on Blu-ray for the first time.

We first reported on the bumper Blu-ray release at CES back in January (see original story below), but today comes the news that the full set will be released in the UK on September 24th, with other markets to follow later that week.

Bond 50 marks the debut of nine James Bond films previously unavailable in high defintion on Blu-ray, and comes with a dossier of more than 122 hours of bonus features.

It will also show the non canon Bond films, so Never Say Never Again and the original Casino Royale. I would guess they may throw XXX in their too, as i believe that is a reworking of the Thunderball script that Sony had the rights war about, and possibly other Bond-like films will pad out the mix.

A great idea. Shame that there picture and compression on the HD Movie channels render the gesture pointless. Buy the box set.

I was very surprised when i first read the title and sort of interested but then i lost interest completely as soon as i found out it was a Sky Movies channel.

Wonder how they will be airing them though...

Probably better than ITV ever did. But that won't be difficult

Although Sky have obtained exclusive rights for a year some websites are suggesting that this dedicated channel will only operate for a month (a bit like the Xmas channel they put up). I suspect that if that were true the movies would then be used as padding for the other movie channels after this channel finishes.

are they getting alan partridge as host for the channel?

to pad things out they could show documentaries and extras, of which there is quite a few

On a related note any indications how ITV plan to pad out two hours of the afternoon / early evening schedule without Bond?

90 quid for the blu ray box set is a bargain, bearing in mind -

    1. Casino Royale (recent one) was 20 quid when it came out
    2. The original DVD box set was well over a hundred when that came out (i bought it !). In fact i think HMV sold it at close to 200 quid.

    I am tempted....

I have to say a whole channel just for bond no matter how much I love the most of the films is a little over the top

^ Surely a "loss leader" product to advertise the platform. In the same way F1 is paid for by football fans
    (1) Really? (2) Pointless though with mid-afternoon edits and cuts, even before further cuts for advert breaks?

Yep. That sums up how I feel. You can buy the Blu-Rays, or will be able to buy on some titles and watch them when you want in the best possible quality.

I bought one of the DVDs from the US and they'd left the security tag in the cover. It set off the alarm in a local store I'd gone into after I'd picked it up from the post office.

that's ITV for you. i used to think james bond movies lasted about 3 hours until i got the dvd boxset and realised ITV add about an hour of news breaks and adverts in the middle

i'm actually halfway through watching the diehard quadrilogy boxset i got for £6 from a sainsburys price mistake

Im looking forward to Bond films on Sky. They should not include the 1967 Casino royale though. That is an insult to Bond films. Its absolute rubbish. I do like the fact that Never Say Never Again is being included. But to me the 1967 Casino royale is not in any way a James Bond film.

I think this is a great move by SKY, I like the Bond films but don't really want to pay £70+ for the boxset (even though it is a bargain considering what you get for the money) as a casual fan of the older bonds, I'll be watching :)
