Brian Singers latest film changes name but fails to impress with first trailer
Although it was originally called Jack the Giant Killer, the studio clearly felt that Jack the Giant Slayer had a better ring to it. We on the other hand would like to politely disagree, because the new name just reminds us of rubbish early 80s fantasy flick Hawk the Slayer. Sadly the teaser trailer doesnt help matters with some fairly cheap looking production design and rather unimaginative effects for the giants. The cast includes Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Ewan McGregor doing his best cheesy grin and Nicholas Hoult (the boy in About a Boy) who seems to be in everything these days. The rest of the cast is also quite impressive with Ian McShane, Warwick Davis, Eddie Marsan, Ewan Bremner and Ralph Brown all joining in the fun. However, the shameless use of an Ian McKellan voiceover in the teaser to try and conjure up memories of the Lord of the Rings, doesnt match the films obvious jokey style. We shouldnt damn a film just from the trailer, after all The Phantom Menace looked like the greatest film of all time based on its teaser, but frankly if you want to see a film that successfully combines humour, romance and fantasy then buy The Princess Bride or Stardust.
Jack the Giant Slayer goes on general release in the UK on the 22nd of March 2013.
