I've Only Gone and ordered something - finally

Well, after months of deliberation, and a number of false starts and near misses, I have finally placed an order. Not sure whether to make this post really as it does kind of open me up to comments that I have made a mistake or bought the wrong system but I am so pleased to have finally made a decision. Ben Tiffin at av-sales.co.uk was a huge help and I feel very pleased with the overall deal. Should be with me within a few days as well!

So, I was originally sure I wanted a HD-ready TV - ended up getting an SD panel.

I've got for the 42PWD8 panel in the end. I know it's not HD ready but there was a great thread on here about 'Who's waiting for a PWD8/PHD8 that struck a chord, and Ben talked a lot of sense too. Plus, the price difference between the PWD and PHD couldn't really be justified given that the PWD will show HD pics, just with some jiggery pokery that will still give me a perfectly good picture for my requirements. I've got a JS convertor for my Sky+ box and a Denon 1706 AV Amp to handle the switching and sound, with a Canton Movie 10 Speaker Package. So Sky+, my Panny E500 DVD player and PS2 go into the Denon and then the Denon attaches to the screen's VGA port.

All sounded pretty good to me, and cost less than the 436XDE that was my other option, with a bit of extra flexibility built in.

Mostly happy to just have made a decision.

Sounds excellent matey, hopefully I'm gonna be getting the same plasma as you soon, and if you are a novice or just starting your av system I personally would recommend the PW8 rather than an HD, mainly due to the price. The Panny PW8 is the best you could get for the price you pay for it, which is very tempting if my budget can stretch! Fingers crossed!

NewToyForXmas, sounds like de ja vu! and is good to hear i'm not the only one thats been through this in the last few months!! I was in exactly the same boat as you just last week, spent months debating...had convinced myself i wanted the panny PV500PED almost at any price it seemed! and ended up buying the PW8 panel last wednesday from av-sales. It arrived the next day...and i have been glued to it ever since!!

I am only a relative novice too so i didn't opt for any of the JS converters or switches (YET!) I just went for the scart terminal board so i could see whether i was happy with the pics from that first. Having just read your post, i'd be very interested to hear your opinions of Sky through the js rgb to vga converter as i am currently running it through scart. Certain channels are great, some average and others really poor but i get the impression from other threads that this is something we will never really get away from.

On the whole though, I'm really REALLY impressed with my new 42PWD8 and i'm pretty sure you will be too, ENJOY!

Those are great comments guys. I am in an agonising wait until the end of the month when I can purchase mine. Have either of you experienced any noticeable buzzing coming from the panel?

Post some pics please!!!

Cheers....

I was in the same situation also, and went for the PWD8. HD is coming, but not in my future, and not in any vast quantity for a while, so the PWD8 is a damn fine replacement until then.

I'm still waiting for a working one to be delivered, but that's a whole another story  :)

Cheers

there is buzzing, as there will be with all plasmas, but i don't find it an issue from an 8ft viewing range....i can hear it between adverts if i sit and listen for it....but i generally don't listen for it!!...i'm still in awe of the thing!!! its fantastic!

Have you managed to play any down scaled HD content on it yet? I am eager to hear and experience what this looks like.

after weeks of research and deliberation and thanks to the input of members on here I ordered a PWD8 yesterday from AV sales.
Not a clue when its being delivered though.

Phew, all positive comments. It's amazing how many of us have been around the same cycle of highs and lows, and how we have probably all nearly bought a number of different options. The more I have been thinking about my choice, the happier I am with it. I am sure that there are better setups, but I think I have got a good setup for my budget (this lot came in at £2,200 with cables, wall mount, the denon, canton, js, PWD8 panel and delivery) when a plasma 'tv' could have cost me the same or more and given me less flexibility. I'll give you all some more feedback once I have had chance to play with it - delivery is Friday so this weekend is plasma-time!!

Comment noted about the scaler and one of the advantages about this approach is that I can pull other things into the setup, or upgrade elements as and when needed. I originally was just looking at the screen, cables and js box but opted for the denon to replace an ageing Pioneer home cinema package because it gave a much neater solution, and handled the connectivity aswell rather than add extra terminal boards. A different way of doing a similar thing (there seems to be so many ways to skin the plasma cat!) but what the hey ... new amp to play with as well!! :)

av sales have given me great after sales service...so you're buying from the right place as far as I'm concerned.
