I've got an interview for a management position in teaching this Friday, a real step up the ladder and a chance to run my own dept.

I've been told that the people in question are very interested, and I know I had glowing references.

Any advice, particularly from those who have been on teaching interview panels, would be helpful.

sorry no experience in teaching, however, I have sat on plenty of management selection panels.

One simple piece of advice I would give, is talk about what yo want to do, and hope to bring to the NEXT job.

So many people make the mistake of talking about what they did in the LAST job an forget that they need to prove that they have the potential to do the new job, especially if it a big step upwards.

    Good Luck !

I have two coming up in the next few weeks - one in front of a board of 5 people

Received this today which has some rather good tips in it. Hope it's of use to you :)

Thanks for the advice - particularly for the interview tips sheet Kelvin.

I'm pretty well prepared now - it all depends on the level of competition now.

Don't worry about the competition, they won't worry about you. Just be relaxed but professional. Know where you want to be in your next role and want you can bring to it.

    Good luck!

Probably dont need to say it but make sure you answer all questions fully.... so if you get a question about "give an example of when you have had conflict" - 1) make sure as far as possible it is a work example (and as recent as possible) 2) Make sure you outline what the problem was, what you did, what the outcome was and how you may handle it differently in the future/lessons learnt. I interviewed a chap for a middle management possition and his exact answer was - "I was in conflict with the woman last night over what to watch" - had to prompt for a more suitable example and then press to get him to answer each stage of the question.

    :D :D :D Very good

It's more appropriate for commercial positions but it's all about what value you add i.e. for the extra £xxxx per year what are you going to return to the organisation

    Good luck

That one stands out because of the level of the job you would really expect better but when I used to work in call centres some of the candidates were much worse with their answers.

One of the best was a guy who had put on his application form that he had had about 20 occurances of sickness in the last 12 months (and they were all one days). When we asked what all these days off were for he said " 1 day was for a bad back, 1 day was for food poisoning and the others were because he had got to bladdered the night before and was too hung over to go in for work" - he scored points for honest but didnt get the job

I'm now waiting for a phone call to let me know either way - should ring in about 15 mins.

    Waiting is hell.

    I don't think I got it though :(

    Congrats.

By the way the worst job seeker I have ever seen was a woman that came into the office (supply teaching agency) with a open can of super in her hand saying she wanted to be a teacher!

I asked her what qualifications she had and her reply was

    wait for it

    its worth the wait

    the reply was

"Well I failed my all GCSEs" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Only one other candidate for the job (there's a bit of a shortage of teachers in my specialty) but she did seem v.good, hence the doubt expressed in my post at about 2.45.

I'd been at an interview with her a while back where we both missed out, so I feel a bit sorry for her at the mo'

Also, awkward moment, I will be seeing her on a course in October we're both booked in for. Hope she's cool about it.

I am now 'Subject Leader' (Head of Dept.) for Drama in a school that has just got its Arts College status, so it is a bit of a high pressure role.

I have trained 'on the job' as it were, starting with specialising in English and sliding gradually across over the past six years.

    Well chuffed!

BTW - for all of you that see Drama as "you gonna be trees then?" I'd like to say, "Yes", as in my current production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream" the whole cast are stylised as a forest. Ironic eh?
