Yes, after much to-ing and frow-ing, and some great advice (much of it very patient from you guys)

I've bought my first DVD recorder (fanfare please!)

I've bought the Panasonic E55 (region 2. I've never actually needed a multi- region machine before even though I've had one for three years)

Now I need some more advice please (before the fun starts when I get it out of the box)

Any owners of Panny E55's out there who can tell me which are the best dvd-r discs and RAM discs to use

Obviously Pansonic discs should be fine, but they come at a premium!

    Thanks in anticipation

www.svp.co.uk sell ram disks made by Ritek, it cost me €20 for 10, apart from that you can get ritek G04/05 -R disks for about £7 for 25, these work fine on almost any player.

    Thanks for that!

Would I get any benefit at all from using premium brand discs

(if I'm giving discs to family, I don't want them failing)

    Thanks

How far did you get with ordering discs?

I took ownership of my E55 dvd recorder yesterday and want to start copying films.

Is it worth paying for nemed brands?

    Cheers
    Danny

In my (not inconsiderable) experience with Panasonic recorders they tend to be happier with Japanese ‘quality’ media such as TDK, Taiyo Yuden, MCC (Verbatim), etc. These are class 'A' discs. I get 100% burn rates with these. As for longevity, who knows? It comes down to the type of dye used. but I doubt that discs which have flaws during manufacture would last as long as ones which don't.

SVP sell preimum grade A disks which were made using the Ritek GO5 dye (which is regarded as a quality dye) but are now using the MCC dye (again quality). For the money that they are asking for a pk of 25 (about £7) I don't think that you can go wrong. Even if every second one fails (and I have no problems with them at all) you will still get more for your money compared to buying TDK etc. In reality most of these manufacturers use the same (or very similar) dye, differences in costs come from branding and marketing costs associated with "named" companies.

This is the link to the general page http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/Show_me_all_the_DVD_R.html

You should be ok with any of the following:

    {DV 3141} ANV Ritek A-Grade (8x) DVD-R in Packs of 25
    {DV 3164} Ritek Ridisc A Grade (4x) DVD-R Disc in Packs of 25
    {DV 3169} Verbatim (8x) DVD-R Disc in Spindle Tubs of 50 (£27 for these)
{DV 3129} Pack of 5 Verbatim (4x) Pastel Coloured DVD-R (With excellent Taiyo Yuden dye) in Slimline Jewel Cases (less than £3 for a 5pk)
{DV 3173} CMC Tango (4x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 50 (These have the CMC dye and should be fine, at under £10 for 50 you can't go wrong)

Let us know how you get on.

I have personally used the Ritek GO5 dye disks and these have worked fine for me in my machine (and several others that I have tested).
