Every channel that will be available on Freesat will be available on Sky HD.

    Same satellites, same frequencies etc.

Assuming ITVHD has a SKY EPG slot or they use a spec that is compatible with SKY's manual tuning. I personally think it's a given that ITV applied for EPG slots a year ago either as future proofing or specifically for HD and that one way or another ITV HD will be viewable with SKY HD boxes, but until ITV actually announce the channel then it's not a certainty.

I bit ironic if Freesat had ITV HD and SKY had CH4 HD, we could have a whole forum full of fanboy slanging matches;)

ITV HD will want to launch with the 400,000 or so Sky HD customers already up and running.

They didn't launch ITV1 or ITV2 when SKY D launched, it was a couple of years later, they thought Cable and OnDigital was enough...
    :)

The only point I was making until ITV say definetly then I don't want people basing a purchase of a SKY+HD box on information that is probably right but not 100% at this time.

True, but to be on Freesat they will need to be on Astra/Eurobird at 28.2.

    Excellent. ITV in HD.

I can't wait for delights such as HD Dancing on Ice, HD Coronation Street. HD poor quality football etc etc. :D

Yes but that doesn't mean it will be on the SKY EPG or be broadcast at a symbol rate the manual tuning option can access.

    Pedantic?
Maybe, but I'd hate someone to buy a SKY+HD now and not being able to watch the channel they actually bought the thing for:)

I think originally the plan for ITV HD was to launch 01/2/08 as most of the new programming that has started whithin past couple of weeks and starting very shortly have been commisioned by ITV as HD productions e.g The Royal Today,Dancing on Ice,Wild at heart and quite a few other things the main sport output UK based Champions League has been mostly in HD since start of season they have even arranged to have the Brits produced in full HD this year last time only some of it was HD .
This date has obviously got back i feel to to fit in with launch of FreeSat which is likely to be end of March time.

But don't you think Sky's 20% stake in ITV might have some influence in whether or not ITV HD appears on the Sky EPG? ;)

All FTA channels on Astra/Eurobird are broadcast with symbol rates included in the Sky 'add channels' option.

The only ones using 29000 are the Sky HD package and C4 HD who sublet their transponder from Sky.

It would be madness for ITV HD not to be on Sky. They'll need to maximise their investment to their shareholders. How will they be able to sell advertising on Sky HD if only a handful of viewers (Freesat HD owners) will be able to watch it?

Don't forget the new Freesat is 'a non profit making' organisation, it's only been formed to help 'digital switch over'.

Nope, SKY have gone out of the way to ensure that at board level they had no direct influence in an attempt to avoid the sanction of the Competition commission. While they have now been given leave to appeal against the forced sell off of half their stake I doubt they will then attempt to put someone on the ITV board just for the sake of ITVHD.

Sorry perhaps I am not being clear.
I think ITVHD will be on the SKY EPG for exactly the reasons you point out.

I am only saying that until ITV officially announce this as fact then I don't feel comfortable recommending SKY+HD to people who really want ITVHD without also pointing out that there is still a small question mark.

I'm not naieve enough to suggest they would, I'm just pointing out that with a 20% stake in the company, it would be rather short sighted to think that ITV HD will not appear on the Sky platform. Unless you're on the board and have an inside track on what's going to happen ;)

Yes, you're being very clear and I understand everything you're saying.

But can you think of one reason why ITV HD would launch without being available to Sky HD viewers?

I wish I was, even with the share price crash a 10% stake to get on the board would mean I could retire:)

Which would also indicate that Sky's 20% stake counts for something too! ;)

    Marketing.
Why improve a rival when the rival themselves has exclusive "free" HD content which it will use to counter the Freesat launch even if only for the short term.
While Freesat is not a revenue generating tool it's purpose is certainly to weaken SKY's hold on Dsat distribuion, the stronger Freesat is at the expense of SKY the better for both the BBC and ITV which they have show is important over the investments they made to go FTA just to deny SKY some cash and control.

    EPG Allocation.
Did ITV start the process of getting an EPG slot for ITVHD last year and well before SKY announced the slowdown of open slots, in other words have they a free EPG slot on SKY ready to go?
Would VM slip them a consideration to be only on Cable and Freesat for a short period to counter the lack of CH4HD?

I honestly don't believe that any FTA HD channel expects to generate new revenues in 2008 even to the extent just to cover costs so as with CH4HD only being on SKY there is more at play than advertising revenues.

Just idle speculation to answer your question and I still expect to see ITVHD on SKY hand in hand with the Freesat launch if not before depending upon transponder testing.

For some reason ITV in HD just does not excite me at all.

But if the PQ of ITVSD on Sky is anything to go by, then just maybe the PQ on ITVHD will compare to a good quality SD channel like BBC1, Channel 5 or Sky Movies.

as long as the PQ of the champions league (and FA cup from next year) is improved I'll be a happy bunny.

I'm still at a loss as to why BBC HD don't broadcast the FA Cup matches, when the OB is always a HD signal.

ITV does sometimes have some good things on... but they are usually one off's.. or on over two nights. So longs as that stuff is in HD (And I'm A Celebrity is next year) broadcast in HD then I'd be happy.

Oh, and Jeremy Kyle as well

I think there's a strong chance ITVHD will be simultaneously launched on Sky HD for the reason above.

I'll be very (unpleasantly) surprised if it isn't.

On another subject it seems it will initially broadcast for less time than the BBC HD service,

"It will begin as a two-to three-hour peak time service that will extend its hours as HD audiences build." :thumbsdow

    http://www.itv.com/Help/hdtvhelp/default.html

As for a launch time, surely Euro 2008 is the prime time to get it going?

And remember what happened in summer 2006 with the World Cup?

ITV HD trial on cable and not sky for those matches!

I believe ITV HD was also on the terrestial trial in the London area with BBC HD too, but Sky didn't have their 20% stake then either. ;)

TW paid ITV for the feed just to get full HD coverage of the World Cup, it was mentioned but not confirmed that ITV and SKY couldn't come to an agreement on price and who would cover carriage/uplinking etc.

Anyone know if Sky are going to get ITV HD anytime soon?

Surely to maximise advertising revenue ITV are going to have to give in and put the channel on Sky HD at some stage?

But it's NOT a channel as anyone normally thinks of this! It's perhaps two movies and a football match each week!

ITV don't want it to be a full-time upscaled channel as it can only carry one regions advertising (Granada just now). STV and UTV don't want it to be available to their customers at all (as they are not part of ITV plc).

If it showed more it could perhaps be its own region for advertising.

There are no regular programmes at all in HD on ITV.

Just occasional things and one offs. Britannia High has been the longest running of these (7 weeks). The Bill went HD for two episodes that crossed over with a German show and is now back to SD.

There have been weeks with no programmes on whatsoever!

Over Christmas compared with BBC HDs extended schedule ITV has two whole programmes - a 90 minute drama about an Elvis fan and something about lesbians.

However, the 'channel' is supposed to be going on Freeview in 2009 in areas which switch off analogue. North West and Wales go by next November, so at that point we might imagine they will have some sort of schedule and (I trust) if it is on Freesat and Freeview it should come to Sky by then.
