also just to add more to the story i read that over the next feew weeks both bbc and itv will be showing footage from the world cup on there HD loops. maybe even full games.

That's right. ITV has put away their ZX Spectrum and sticky tape back into their drawer. They are now going to concentrate now on reducing the bit rate on SD.
And do a 'phone quiz where viewers have to text in what they think the bit rate is on ITV.
A clue is the cost of the call is higher.
Are these using the HD-Trial Freeview box?

yeah they were about 500 test boxs sent out in london for a trial
But since OFCOM don't want any of the freed up bandwidth after the analogue shutdown being taken up with high bandwidth TV services, terrestrial HD will probably never happen.
