Are there any benifits in buying an unregistered ITV Digital box over renting one ?
Buying your own box seems popular but I cant see why at the moment as :
1) They are expensive, circa £300.
2) If they go wrong you have no back up support from ITV Digital, and I hear that shelf life of these boxes can be short.
So, if anyone has any answers I would be grateful as I am planning to rent one at the moment.
Thanks.
T.Barnes.

The benefit on owning an ITV digital box is you don't have to subscribe to their channels in order to get the free ones. Under the current system you have to pay a minimum of £6.99 per month forever in order to watch digital terrestrial TV, even if you don't want the subscription channels.

Don't confuse buying a box with pre-pay though. With pre-pay boxes which cost £120 you still have to subscribe after 12 months. If you buy a box for £300 you don't have to subscribe - ever.

If you could buy a DTT box for £100 I would do so, because I have Sky and only want DTT for ITV1 and ITV2. £300 is too much to own a box. Once ITV1 and ITV2 come on Sky I will tell ITV where to stick their box

ITV1 and 2 are to commence broadcasting from the Astra satellite before the end of this year. Sky will be handling the link. Check elsewhere on these forums for more info. (Try searching: ITV)

I can't wait to have ITV1 on Sky Digital (I've never actually watched ITV2 apart from the US Grand Prix which was live on it last year!). I'll be able to pension off *my* ONdigital (ITV-Digital) system at long last; yes, fortunately it's mine and I have no subscription charges. I only ever use it to watch the Grand Prix and can't be bothered to change the amp etc to match the source so I can flick through the creaky digital terrestrial broadcasts. One thing that I do notice (and therefore won't actually throw it away!) is that ITV-Digital beams uninterrupted when Sky Digital conks out during a severe rain storm!

    Regards
