ITunes streaming vs disc discussion

I have started this thread to discuss all things regarding iTunes streaming vs disc

@lgans316 can you check the bitrate of Donnie Darko and Cinema Paradiso? The UHD discs look significantly more detailed than the streaming versions on iTunes for both these Arrow titles when i do an A/B comparison. I wonder if it’s because FIM are able to squeeze more detail onto UHD discs than most, or they just have low bitrates on iTunes.

You can find here:

I don't have Cinema Paradiso 4K disc but have Donnie Darko on 4K wherein the Theatrical disc doesn't playback correctly due to authoring issues. Can compare Director's Cut disc V streaming and feedback later in the week.

FiM have been doing a great job with the encoding. Wish they do more.

Some of the problems I see (disc version).
Distinct lack of detail in blacks.
Plus it tops out at a little more than 72Mbps

I can’t imagine the black levels being much different on iTunes vs Disc assuming they are encoded from the same master.

@Nobbler

Please can you post the movie name and time stamps. When I get the US set, I will compare it Vs. the stream.

@cybersoga

Will definitely compare once I have the US set in hand.

Just wondering, the post you put up on the John Wick deal in the other thread is quite attractive for all 3 films, I have them already on digital so not sure I need the discs unless they are a clear cut massive improvement over the itunes stream? Unfortunately my 4K player only outputs HDR not DV which is what they have on itunes so that might have a baring on a decision I guess?

These films were mastered from 2K Digital Intermediates so I can't imagine there being much difference in fine detail. DV on iTunes may actually be preferable. The sound might be better on disc.

That was my gut feeling, the sound in these films is very good but have only watched the streams, and given the discs only have the HDR10 Layer and not DV im tempted to stick with itunes, despite the deal being very attractive, with a young family I hardly turn the volume up to 11 these days anyway!
