Itunes - Moving all my media to an exernal HDD?

Now I may be doing this wrong, but I normally add music to itunes using the import option and not adding music to an itunes folder. I have my music in a folder and my wife has hers in another folder (both within My Music). I have noticed that if I move a track from one folder (my wife's) to another (mine) then itunes cannot find it until I point it in the right direction.

Is there an easy way to move tracks without having to do this in itunes? The reason I ask is that I am now planning on buying an external hard drive for all our media, but don't fancy having to re-map all our tracks (which is now over 800) when I do move them over.

Buy new drive.
Connect new drive.
Move songs to new drive.
Clear list from itunes. (Ctrl A press delete) enter!. Make sure only remove from itunes option is switched on or they will end up in the recycle bin.
Add folder from new drive again to itunes.
Job done.

++ I only use itunes as a method to moved songs from pc to ipod I don't play via itunes. ;) ++
