Itunes/app store fails to connect

I'm having trouble with my wife's iPhone 4 , it won't connect to iTunes to update the apps , I can search the app store and download apps but it says it can't connect to iTunes when I try to update them ( It still gets the update required notification )
It's on 3 network and we are both using my iTunes account , I'm sure it used to work ok and as far as I can tell all the settings are the same as my phone (4s) on O2
Any ideas?
