iTunes Album Art question

I'm new to iTunes and wanted to know about adding album art. Say if I dragged a 100kb album cover onto the file in iTunes, would it be compressed down to a more manageable file i.e. pixel and file size for the iPod nano? Also, is this file copied to the iPod one or is it embedded in every song in the album i.e. technically 15 copies for an album with 15 tracks?

There are a number of ways to put album art into itunes which is then updated on your ipod

The method I use is firstly select the album in itunes i.e. click the album name you want to add art to, then either right click on the file or go to the tool bar and click ‘file’, then ‘ get info’. A screen appears which has an empty square box in the right corner, the open screen also contains information about the album.

Then find a picture of the cd art you want to import, I use amazon but others are available, then copy and paste the picture directly onto the empty square, you should get a message something like, ‘do you want to update all items’. Click okay and the artwork will then appear against all tracks on the album.

The picture size is reduced accordingly to fit into itunes so it takes up minimal space, although you will notice an slight increase in the size of the mp3 file….hope this helps.

If you just want to add artwork to a single file or multiple files, you can just highlight the files you want to add to and carry out the same procedures.

Another way to add artwork is when you in itunes and you are playing a track, an empty square appears in the bottom left corner of the screen which might say ‘no artwork displayed’ you can drag and drop pictures into this space which will add the artwork to that particular file only but not the rest of the album

Thanks for the quick reply. Am I right in thinking though that there will be a slight increase in file size for all the tracks on that album?

Yes your right Wig, you will notice that when you connect your ipod to itunes that file size will increase slightly with the picture on it, although not by much, try doing a test a copy the artwork to one track then compare it to the same track without and you will be able to judge whether the artwork with worth the extra memory it uses....particulary if you own a nano which is a little short on space if youve got thousands of tracks

If you're using the browser view in iTunes, with an album selected, you can use the same artwork square to drag-n-drop art for the entire album. Much, much quicker that using get info on the album, especially if you have lots to do. Just make sure you have *only* the album selected, and not any of the songs individually.

I think there's a now playing / selected toggle on the artwork square (assuming you've selected 'show artwork'). Make sure it's on selected.
