Hi all,

The other night I tried my system with a Centre Rear speaker....

I'm going to give you my opinion but first I must admit that the centre rear isn't tone-ally (?) matched to the L/R rear.

I can only use 6.1 on DVD either as a true ES (I used Gladiator) or as Matrixed 6.1
Here is what I found...

BLOODY AWFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On The Matrix, Roof scene (bullit time) it actually muddled the sound from all three rears and during Gladiator it was just like more noise which I actually found quite irritating!
I was expecting to be blown away by it all but alas, it wasn't to be.
In about a million years when I have enough money to get my own place (see under my name for explanation.....:( ) I may try again with having all speakers WAY behind the listening position at ear level.

Who has tried 6.1 and what did you think?

Thanks

I did an A/B (cable attached / detached) test on Monsters Inc DTS - the door sequence. And I could notice the difference  and it was better!!!

Blade 2 is the only other disk I have tried with the extra speaker enabled (ie cable run over top of carpet to centre rear placed on a stool to bring it to the right height) - It sounded very nice indeed, I will try it one day without the centre speaker just to see.

So I don't know what's going on for you - haven't tried the films you mentioned (my copy of Gladiator is R2 so I don't think there is a 6.1 track there mind you I haven't watched it yet  ).

Are you getting the EE of FOTR next week? thats going to be one to give your system a real work out on

Wilbur

I do feel like I didn't have it set up right but it didn't just sound like it was "not quite right", it sounded BLOODY WRONG!!! Although I think it may have served best in standard Pro Logic, but my amp (Yammy RXV730rds) won't give me that option.

By the way, What do you mean by EE and FOTR? Am I being stupid here? Possible, I don't think I've slept for 6 hours in one go for about a fortnight!!!

Extended Edition of Fellowship Of The Rings :)

BTW I have a Yammy 630 & had no setup issue at all - apart from the where the hell do I put the 6th speaker. Just hooked it up set the amp to recognise the presence of the speaker, ran the test signal, didn't bother changing the timings 'cos it sounded ok and that was it.

Hi

How far behind you is the rear centre speaker? It really needs to be at least a meter or so to get an impression of depth behind. Also some 5.1 tracks don´t sound very good with the rear centre speaker switched on, some sound excellent though, but its a bit hit & miss.

Try angling the speaker down at your listening position (if it isn´t already) and play about with the actual channel level as well, sometimes turning it down a few db can help.

I know what you mean about the placement issue. Also if I was to do it properly I would have to buy two new pairs of surrounds and two pairs of speaker stands!! It all seem's a bit much for one speaker!!!

Still, as it is a function available to me, I still want it!

And to answer your other question, I thought LOTR was crap and turned it off half way through (I think at that point it had been on for about 3 days) and went and done some DIY!! And I hate DIY!

I know I am asking for a pasting saying that and I hope that maybe my mind just wasn't on it.....

Thanks Jase, good idea's. Unfortunately, as I have had to move back into my Father's house the rear speaker would be behind my bed on the floor or (between the bed and the wall) or stuch betwwen the bed and the wall, raised and about 3 inches below the pillows.

So I guess you could say it isn't an ideal setup...

Now there's an ambitious man: trying to get good 6.1 sound in a bedroom!

Good luck Shodan.:)

Thanks Mate, I'm gonna need it!!!!!

I desperately need to save money, (to escape to my own abode) as now I have none, zip, nada, zero, zilch, yet all I can think about is upgrade's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a cure???? Lottery win maybe or euthanasia?

Woe is me (this is crazy, I hate depressed people!)

Love, joy and peace to the world!

If the speaker is on the floor try have it pointing straight up at the ceiling or raised off the floor but still pointing straight up. Works quite well, I tried it a while ago.

Not the right time to mention the 19 year old, multiple conviction thug who just won £9.7 million on the lottery then...

...or maybe it means we all have a hope :)

Jase,

Those are the ways I tried it matey but I still didn't like it and it meant the bed was away from the wall too.

I think the money should be taken away from that silly fella and given to me. A worthy cause I think....

I admire your restraint :)

And total mastery of understatement.

When asked what car he intended to buy (as opposed to steal) that lotto winner guy actually replied 'Ford Orion'.

At least it's nice to know there will be plenty of people more than happy and capable of relieving that guy of his money and we'll see £9million pumped back into the economy VERY quickly.

Why thank you, sometimes I even amaze myself.... (Waddya mean, shouldn't be to hard... )

I'd like to releive the theiving basket of his head! Still, a ford orion, maybe he just needs therapy... Mind you, why would he want an Orion, he wasn't from Essex. Do you think he'll get gold plated furry dice? Maybe he'll have "Dopey and bird" across the top of his windscreen in silver instead of green....

Oi! I'm from Essex, & I hate Orions!
Especially when I have to drive around the many burnt out models dumped on the small country roads when I'm out on my round!

Going back to the original thread subject, I didn't know the rear centre speaker needed to be back that far for it's best use! Thanks for the tip! I'll stick to 5.1 for now, I'll not get 6.1 in my postage stamp of a room. :(
Loads of money saved ;) - bang goes my next amp upgrade though. :(

Just for the record, I too am from Essex and in fact still live there. And I don't have an Escort or an Orion or a Nova ether. And no I'm not asking you to guess what I drive so no wise cracks please! ;)

Corsa nota... Oh that sounded Italian...:D

There's always one...:p
