If you don't mind a bit of a drive to Stourbridge, there is one in the High Street called Luciano's here

Used it a few times and very nice it is too!

Also over that way there is one underneath the Pedmore House, forget what it's called though :(

i'd suggest san carlos in Brum as well - i think it was voted the best Italian Resturant outside London. best off booking on saturday though.

as a slight aside its never failed to impress the ladies after a visit there ;) if you get my drift.

Its not to impress her its for her Birthday

think brum maybe a bit far as could be a few guests too and transport would then be an issue.

If it ends up Just the two of us then Brum would be ok maybe stay overnight so dont have to travel back same night

So any more local to Stafford ?

    Thanks

Not sure of the name at the mo but there is a wicked restaurant in Stone. Which isn't far. Good food, good prices nice people.

It's at the one of the ends of the High St. I will try and find the name out later.

    Regards

Right, all your probelms are solved.

I was trying to think of this yesterday and then had to ask Lorna for the name of the place. It's not cheap, but the location is fantastic, the food is amazing and the ambience of the restaurant is lovely. Perfect for a Birthday. The food is traditional Italian, no pizza's as far as I can remember.

The place is called Da Vinci's and it is toward the top of the High Street in Ironbridge.

Ironbridge may seem like a long way away but really it's a short nip down the A518 towards Newport, down the A41 for a mile then a right at the island, through Telford and into Ironbridge. There is parking virtually opposite too.

You will have to book a table though on 01952 432250.

    You old smoothy...

In terms of accomodation, we stopped in the Days Inn hotel at The Mailbox (next to the BBC) - 59 quid for the night (through laterooms.com), and it is a really nice modern hotel - very good for the price in the city centre (although parking at The Mailbox / almaison carpark works out at 15 quid for 24 hours). It is also on the canalside, so you can take lunch in Brindley Place, have a few beers in the bars around The Mailbox and then walk to the San Carlo - it really is that central.

You (and she), won't regret it

    Cheers

Shady sounds great and the one in Leicester sounds even better but I think the one from Steve is what i'm looking for.

Am looking into a short break to Pisa Florence too so if anyone in the know with regard to accomodation and restaurants there speak up.

Cheers for all the input gents you have given me some fantastic choices

take her to Rome and go to "agthas and romeos" went there for Mrs D's 40th last year - the single best meal/service/location ever! the meal made me cry i've never eaten such beautiful food.

the meal was 5 courses (excluding the home made chocolates that make any other chocolate taste like engine oil) the service was amazing. they onlt have one sitting a night so you can take as long as you want to eat. the whole meal took about 3 and half hours all in. it cost about 130 - 150 including two bottles of wine from a celler that scaried me - the wine BOOK was about 3 inches think. Stunning - simply stunning. it only has about ten tables so you are made to feel really special.

i told the chef it was the best meal i'd ever eaten and she burst into tears and gave me a huge hug. the mayor of Rome was in the same night as us. :smashin:

    Now Now!!

To be fair, the last time I went to Birmingham on a night out I witnessed the beating of a bloke outside a club whilst the bouncers just stood and watched  Not a pretty sight and one I don't really wnat to see again. It kind of put me off the place even though I know it goes on everywhere.

I must be getting old I think :D

oh, must add that the restaurant I recommended in Ironbridge only has one sitting for each table each night too, thus the need to book :)

    No mate, Broad Street

I have actually always hated the kind of atmosphere that gets generated at these kind of clubs, posers all looking for trouble

I knew someone who lived in the City Centre, just off Broad Street, really expensive property, minutes walk from the main bit of town and 5 minutes drive from where all the murders have been taking place lately, very strange!

Lived in Stafford for 3 years. Italian food is my favourite. After three years of looking for a good restaurant I gave up looking and emigrated to the Isle of Wight instead! There's several here!

Great curry shop on the big roundabout though - Alishan. Not much of an ambience (it's a converted pub) but the food is impressive, especially the breads.

We have two very good ones here - strictly non poncey.Seaffod platter @ £25 inc lobster washed down with Pouilly fuisse and followed by a most devne choccy pud and a red sweet wime that is unctious yum!The other one is mega popular doing very good value food.- again no poncey turrets with dribbled sauces
