Normal HTPC rules apply. Must be quiet in DVD mode. Noise not important when writing CD's. Region free firmware available, etc, etc.

Slot or Tray loading is fine and preferably not over expensive.
It's to go into the DIGN HTPC case so I've got a one stop shop for playing mp3 playlists and burning available from the one machine, along with the DVD playback as well, obviously.

God that took a long time to type with one hand. Broke my collarbone at Donington last Friday :(

lo nut. I won't be getting it for a while. Just wondered if anyone had experience of one, how noisy they are compared to dedicated DVD drives. I wouldn't have thought they'd be much different.

Well, I've never owned a burner, yet alone a combo, so I'm not an 'authority' I' afraid. Plextor should be darn good quality though :)

My laptop has a dvd/cdrw combo drive, it's not noticeably noisier than my HCPC DVD drive, we use it on the boat for the odd movie when the weather is crap, like a lot recently! Background noise is not intrusive even when it's on your lap! It's labelled Mat****a, obviously it wouldn't fit a desktop case, but I mention it cos I can't see why a desktop drive should be so different, though the CDRW on my cinema pc can buzz a bit when forced to work hard, I think maybe it's a bit old.

Honest thats what the drive is called, I see it's got asterisked!!! The case is a kind of dark brown mind you.
