Is it possible to connect a pre/pro to the multichannel inputs of a receiver?

There seems to be no end to the new sound formats coming out, DTS 96/24 for example, which I may wish to use in the future but do not have on my current receiver. If I could connect a processor with these capabilities to the multichannel inputs, I would still be able to use the receiver's tuner and analogue inputs as well as have access to the new decoding.

Any thoughts?

Yeah you can do that.. for example adding a Harmon Kardon ADP-303 (Dolby Digital processor) to a Harmon Kardon AVR-80 (Pro-Logic AV amp with 5.1 input) allowed early adopters of LD/DVD into Dolby Digtal sound.. so replacing the ADP-303 with something else (ie Rotel 976) will add the newer formats.

However if you play do do that it's probably better just to replace your current reciever with just a new AV amp.. or a processor/poweramp setup.
