Hi everyone, i just want to ask a small question. Is a 7800gtx 256mb faster than my current 8500gt 256mb at playing games like counter strike, combat arms, company of heroes(not dx10) etc? The only difference i can see is that the 7800gtx has ddr3 memory? Any help would be great. Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply, i really appreciate it. Is £29 including delivery a good deal? And it also comes with a fanless passive cooler?

I would say so, although it's hard to judge in relative terms as the new crop of cards are so much faster these days. It was a cracking card for its time, but I don't know whether it might run a little hot with that passive cooler?

Looking at that hierarchy chart in my first reply above, the closest new generation card I'd recommend is the HD 4650 512MB - this will outperform the 7800 GTX but with half the power consumption, but these start at around £45 new (you won't find them any cheaper second hand yet really).

Your other possibility is a second hand 8800GT 256MB which would be twice as fast again (these were selling new for £50 about a year ago, so there may be some second hand bargains about). Hard to find though.

On balance, £29 inc is a decent price. The card will manage okay in current games like COD4 and 5, so why not if you're on a budget.

I am a young enthusiast in pc building etc, and my birthday is coming up soon(in april), so do you think it would be a good stand in card but better than my current one, until i get a high end one after my birthday? Also there is a screenshot where its advertised, thats shows it running at 34 degrees. Is that good?

That's great for a gaming graphics card. A little too great for me to believe actually on passive cooling, unless he's just switched the PC on. Gaming graphics cards tend to idle at around 40-55deg and run quite happily up to a little over 80deg under load (they can run higher, but about 80deg is recommended). Perhaps he's got very good airflow in his case to get it that low on passive cooling, but it's a very good figure, yes.
