Could this be another nail in the coffin of HD-DVD?
If the American porn industry gets behind Blu-ray in a big way..then it could just pave the way for a single format winner.

I can't see porn being much of factor for either format, don't most people just download it nowadays? Before VHS, probably the only way to see porn was in a cinema or with a projector, so when VHS came along, it was great because it was so easy to get/watch in your own home. That's my theory anyway, I'm a bit young to have first hand experience of the situation :)

One of the big selling points for hi-definition is that it's like "looking through a window" - I somehow can't see them using that if they try to sell porn on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray ;)

Do not underestimate the effect this could have on a particular format.....the american porn industry is massive! ;)
Hi-definition is already big business, and is only going to get bigger.

The article seems to say that the studios will be making for both. So I don't see it going either way then.

The way i read it,they were originally going exclusively for HD-DVD,but they appear to be admitting they were wrong, and are now slowly moving towards Blu-ray.

It wasn't the porn studios who chose to drop Blu-ray, but the other way around (sort of).

Apparently it's something to do with Disney who, being a strict 'family' company, won't have their material pressed at the same pressing plants as adult material. As the number of pressing plants was so small, and the proportion of BDs being ordered so relatively large, it'd have been a stupid decision to chose a porn contract and lose Disney's orders.

The number of pressing plants has grown, which is probably why there are more porn BDs appearing.

I definitely read something on this concerning Disney,so i believe you are correct on that part, but nobody said Blu-ray was being dropped here. :)
Blu-ray is actually on the increase in the porn industry, its HD-DVD that could end up being dropped.

Am I the only one who finds this amusing? For years, Playstation owners have been doing triangle, square, triangle etc to see if Lara will spontaneously lose all her clothing - and now all their prayers will be answered!

Must try and get the mental image of hundreds of acne-ridden teenagers spending a LOT more time in their bedrooms out of my brain.

I don't think you can ever say porn will drop HD DVD. There's that many small studios churning it out I can't see the whole lot switching as one. Plus with no region coding it can be done anywhere in the world by anyone and imported. The porn industry isn't like the film industry. People might buy a specific format to watch Gladiator or LOTR in high def. I think with porn people just want to watch it. Not a specific title. These links covered some of the issues:

Digital Playground has dropped HD DVD

I really don't think porn is going to determine very much in this format war. In the 1980s it was a choice of buying adult material on VHS or going to dodgy cinemas. Obviously VHS won. But now there are many ways to consume it: most noteably DVD and Internet. So what does HD DVD and Blu-ray offer that these doesn't? Well nothing on the flexibility side so the single selling point is going to be the higher resolution. And for 99.5% of adult titles out there this will be irrelevant as the production standards are simply not high enough to benefit from HD. There are a handful of high quality titles and these will do well - but they are a tiny minority.

If anything this news shows the divide in the high def user base. The same day as HD DVD was allegedly 'dropped' by Digital Playground because they foresaw the bulk of their purchasers as PS3 owners, the BBC announced they planned to continue HD DVD support because their high brow drama/docs sell better on HD DVD.
