Ive been having a few difficulties with my trusty marantz ki player.... it has taken a liking to random skipping..... as if the disc is scratched, but in fact there are no scratches...... then tonight, i put a disc in and it came up asking for a disc. I tried it again and repeatedly it didnt recognise a disc as being loaded. Even a power off didnt sort it. Only after a couple of hours powered down has it come back to life.

Should i be starting to save for a new machine? :(

The lens might simply be dirty. There are a number of proprietry lens cleaners out there which may be of use. Allsop's CD cleaner is a good one if you want to give it a try. It's saved my old CD player from the scrapheap :) .

Sounds very much like a dying laser, you can get them replaced for around 50 quid, if you want to keep the player. If you open up the case, its relatively easy to clean the laser with a q tip and some cleaning solution (alchohol ). Did that on my Arcam, which was succesful.

No im afraid not.... i was looking to have to go down to nearly £700 to sell it...... that is plain ridiculous. There were people passing it over for all sorts of reasons, i couldnt believe that so many people were hung up on specs, automatically assuming any xga res machine or greater luminousity would be better..... I know how good the machine is and it is of more use to me at £700..... so the crt is on hold until next year!

Glad it solved your problem. Seven hundred quid is ridiculous, if I had'nt bought my Sanyo, I would have bit your hand off for that.
Im scared to look at a well set up CRT as I might just be tempted.

Spoke too soon....... i swore at length as top gun soundtrack stuttered then decided not to continue! maybe was just a fluke....

Out of interest, whats the lifetime of a laser meant to be?

I know what crt looks like...... its much better..... but not good enough to sell a perfectly good plv30 at a loss of £3.50 for every hour i used it!

No one seems to know the exact lifespan, the older ones seem to last a lot longer, seem to remember something about them having glass lenses. Maybe its something to do with heat build up that destroys them as they seem to gradually die.

Anyway its about time you updated that KI, now you have all those lovely amps, your system demands something better. But I know how you feel, I hung on to the first Arcam player for a long time then swapped it for a KI (wasnt all that keen, but it was more detailed than the Arcam), then after listening to a CD17 it had to go.
