Is there any advantage to connecting a cable box through AV receiver?

Heyas,

I recently bought an Onkyo NR809 and a set of the Energy Classic 5.1 speakers. I was wondering if there would be any advantage of running the cable box through my receiver versus running it directly to my TV and using the optical out to connect it to the receiver.

At the moment I don't have HD service because our landlord covers the cable bill and didn't know whether or not the NR809's video processor would offer any improvement in video quality.

I looked around for an answer but couldn't find what I was looking for...Thanks in advance guys!

If you don't have HD cable provision then you'll not have access to Dolby Digital 5.1 via cable. There's no advantage gained by a direct cable box to AV amp connection apart from video switching duties.

The video processing of the amp will probably not be any better than that of the TV?
