Is the Sony 1080 much better than the 1070?

I ask because I've ordered one and it's awaiting stock. I have a 930 that I'm happy with, but want DPL2 and DTS Discrete, and people on here who've received them seem happy so far.

I just read (not sure why I didn't do this before) Stuart M Robinson's review of the 1070 and he wasn't too impressed.

To be fair one of the reasons he wasn't impressed was the lack of PL2 and DTS 6.1 but he also criticsed some of the sonic qualities.

Now, if the sound of the 1080 is similar to / better than the 930, which had a great review from HCC then I'm happy, but if it isn't then perhaps I should cancel and look elsewhere.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

It indicates what a personal thing sound reproduction is. For what it's worth, there was little contained in Stuarts' appraisal that i agreed with.I'm not saying he was wrong,he would call it as he seen (heard) it, but if you feel the presentation of the 930 is fine then i'm sure you will find the 1080 to you taste. Each to his (her :D ) own.
PS i'm sure Stuart will be along soon ;) .

I found my 1080 to be sonically superior to my 940 (rave reviews everywhere). Certainly, the dacs are better when using a digital input from CD/DVD.

I have no experience with the 1070 but doubt it's worse than the 930/940/1080. Just his opinion, have a listen for yourself is the best way.

I got my new 1080 to replace my old 830 and was really dissapointed! It lacks umph and seemed to have half the power of my old amp. I have checked everything and gone through every setting and still it was bad. It has far superior sound processing and you could hear things you couldn't before and I was impressed by everything it had but it just didn't sound right, wether because it says it's 'UK Tuned' I don't know but needless to say my old amp was put back into use! When I watched the Phantom menace my old amp hits you with the sound pressure and bass but the new 1080 just was pathetic and sounded too clinical and lacked depth. I'd love to know what everyone else made of this amp do I just have a 'bad' model that needs sending back for replacement??? :)

Have you played around with the setup?

I find it over complicated compared to the 1070.

Playing the trailer to LOTR it sounded just as loud as the 1070
but having just watched The Sweetest Thing, thought it was quieter? maybe the disc i don't know, so will stick avia in later and see.

The 930 is supposed to be one of the best amp in its price bracket. It may be worth trying the STRAV555 or whatever.

If you replace the 930 might as well get something definately better!

I've tried all the settings including setup. I watched Monsters Inc the other night in DTS which sounded great!! It just seems that digital inputs are so quiet, when I switched back to watching Sky the volume made me jump it was so loud, so there seems to be a problem with the digtal imput side. I then tried different optical leads and then a coax but still it was quiet. I have another amp on it's way to try as Sony seemed to think it was a problem with my amp so I'll keep you all posted. It's a shame as I like the amp and having DTS -ES and Surround Ex makes such a difference when watching films. As one of the previous comments said sound is a very personal thing and people really need to listen to the amp their going to buy! BTW has anyone owned a Yamaha DSP-A1? someone even said I should have bought one of these instead!!!

Mattk,

Can you help? I've got a STR-DB1080 and I can't get the remote to control my Sky box, who are you talking to at Sony?

I've tried the "contact us" at Sony.net 4 times and I've heard nothing after 2 weeks.

My Sky sound is a little louder, but not much than my DVD player.

Can't you turn down the sound on the Sky box in the setting?

I cant get the new amp to control my skybox either  No-one will commit and give me their name at Sony!! You can adjust the sound output level on the sky box. I haven't changed a thing since I last used my old 830 it just seems this new amp is behaving a lot different. The old amp seemed to cope with any signal at the same level , now DVD's and Laserdiscs sound so much quieter. I think it's just going to be something we have to put up with.

From what I've put together regarding the Remote is that it's not a "learning" remote in the sense that it learns IR signals.

I think Sony call it a learning remote because you can program it, but as I said I've been unable to get a response out of Sony.

Seems stupid to me that they produce an Amp "UK tuned" and yet it won't control Sky box's.
