Is the 8G Pioneer 42" PDP-428 still the best 42" screen out there? How does the PQ compare to a 9G 50" Pio or KRP?

I went hunting for one of these over the weekend and there are still ex-display models in Currys dotted about for £900. However I am not keen on a demo version but there are a few stores stating that they have 2 in stock. In theory this will mean that they have a brand new one in stores.

Just want to make sure that this set is still worth the hunting.

I have managed to track down one brand new boxed 4280XD for £895.

Is this a good price or is it possible to still get hold of a 50" 8G Kuro for an extra £200?

Yeah i noticed, thanks. I have spoken with Currys and hacve been advised although they have ex-displays left they don't have any new, where there are 2 in stock the second is a faulty screen. I'm checking some stores tonight :smashin:

I replaced my panasonic 42PX80 with a new 4280 from Currys. The difference was very clear, but both were great value.

At their original prices, I'd still be watching the Panasonic. A 50" was too big for my viewing, but there was no obvious difference c.f. a 50" on SD.

If you are lookink for new 428's, then I would check Costco if you have one local.
The Chester branch had 3 in stock last week (but no price on them)

I'm just about to pull the trigger on an 4280 - seen it and it look fine all complete and no marks that I can see.

Cost £897.96 - I take it this is still a good price for this screen as I'm not sure of any other alternative especially for that cost.

Saw it with SD dvd and it looked great - HD is going to WOW me I'm sure.

Movign from LCD to this so fingers crossed.

The good thing about the 428's is the vast amount of settings that can be tweaked. You won't be disappointed.:smashin:

There is a brand new 5080XD on eBay. It would be great if I could get this for a grand. The seller has a rating of 47 and it states it comes with a 3 year Pioneer warrenty. I was under the impression you either get a 12 month or 5 year Pioneer warrenty and not 3 year!!

I plan on paying via Paypal with credit card. Also it is being shipped via RM Special Delivery. It is a simple process if this deal goes pair shaped with getting your money back. I.e. arrives damaged /not as described etc

Also I have noticed for a few quid more than the 4280 I could get a 50" Vierra Panasonic 1080P with Freesat. Does the 4280 still outperform the latest Panasonics in terms of PQ? Is the PQ marginal or is it very clear?

The Panasonic PF11 has black levels near that of the 8G Kuro.

It's a good alternative, which some will even prefer.

The delivery option is suspicious. The seller is quoting £23 to post the TV via RM Special Delivery (not possible). The TV weighs over 30 kg so to post it with ParcelForce 24 hr service it is £43 with insurance limited to £150. I would only buy if you could collect the TV.

Flatcoat: I think you are correct - this definetely sounds dodgy. Here is the seller's response to my questions:

Q1. Why was this item removed yesterday and resubmitted?
There was a small problem with my account but i think it has been sorted now.

Q2. Is this TV brand new, unmarked, completely sealed with all accessories /manuals unopened?
    yes new fully sealed.

Q3. Where was it purchased and when?
I purchased it from an outlet not to long ago(not more than two months ago).

Q4. How come there is a 3 year Pioneer warrenty? It is normally 12 months or 5 years with Pioneer?
Well I saw three years manufacturers warranty, maybe I read it wrong.

Q5. How much will it be insured for during transit?
It will be insured for more than £1000, i think but i will double check. Thanks for asking and showing interest.

eBay have just cancelled this item as they suspected that the account was being used fraudulently.

LMDavies: you've really got to decide about screen size according to your viewing distance. if you are sitting 2.5 to 3 meters (up to 10 feet), then i'd say run an get a new 428 or 4280 Pio because they are the best 42" screen out there (better colors, better blacks and more intelligent stretching of 4:3 SD material to 16:9 than Panasonic's outdated "JUST" function) regardless if Pioneer stops or doesn't stop TV production. if you sit more than 10ft from the screen, try and get a 50 inch HD ready Pioneer 5080 if at all available. unfortunately 9G are full HD and probably over your budget. best of luck!

Just moved house and room is alot bigger. Viewing distance is now 4.5 metres so I guess I need to be looking at 50" Kuro's which rules out the 42". Unless I see a really good deal for a 5080 then I will be looking at the 5090 or KRP on finance. Shame that TLC does not do finance.
