A friend of mine is looking to replace his old Pio 535 with a new player. In the price range he's looking at (around £300) the Pio 656A seems like a good bet, but one thing about the 535 was that the drive mechanism was VERY noisy - just wanted to check the 656A wasn't the same...

from my expereince (had a 717, 737, 747 and seen friends 656), most pioneer mech's have always seemed noisy - especially when you compare them to something like the Sony's.

You tend to hear quite a lot of spin-up noise and sometimes you can hear the laser tacking across the disk in very quiet parts of the film if the player is quite close.

I've had Pioneer 505, 626 and have now got a 656. The 505 was fairly quiet, the 626 was terrible with certain disks and ok on others. The 656, however, is the quietest of the three. the disk noise is no longer obtrusive even with my 'worst' disks, but with most discs I can't even hear it at all. I have mine situated on a hi-fi rack, but not behind a glass door, about 8 feet away from where I am sitting.

    I agree with yabadaba.

I too upgraded from the 626 to 656 and it is a lot quieter.

On the 626 I could sometimes hear the disk spinning away on quieter parts of movies but don't notice it with the 656.

Only time I hear my 656 is when the tray is opening/closing and at initial spin up.

I sit approx. 3 ft from the unit during playback.

I guess it is fairly quiet ;)

    Cheers
