Are any plasmas any good for watching football?

I aks because i went into Richer Sounds last week and I overheard the salesmen saying that none look good for football on their screens (but perhaps this might be because of the way there are set up in the shop).

I've got a Panny PW7 and watched West Ham the other day. It was absolutely awful. ;)

OK, on a serious note, watching footie has been the only disappointment of the Plasma experience for me. Everything is fine when it's relatively close up, but when you get the long view of big areas of the pitch you do see some rather blocky areas of green.

Of course I have heard that a scaler might sort this sort of thing out. Piers, where's my demo? :D

Thanks Cardiff for your reply. I'm currently watching football on a 14" as my main TV has packed in, so anything would be an improvement at the moment.

What's a scaler and how much do they cost?

Football on DVB on 42" Viera looks brilliant here, 37 inch would be slightly better at same viewing distance. No motion smearing whatsoever. If I was being picky I'd say wide shots of the pitch have less detail than a good analogue pic on a CRT but then I've only seen relatively small CRTs. I don't watch the pitch though!

I think a lot depends on source. Many people who complain about football quality are watching via Sky. I don't have latter (apart from Sky Sports News on Freeview) but concensus seems to be that Sky signal is inferior to Freeview if both have decent installation.

    Adrian and C.I.,

Football tests plasmas! Long shots are the problem, the grass goes blocky. HD screens make that better and scalers help even with Sd plasmas but I know they cost!

Spot on Piers, it's only the long shots that are the problem.
Nor do I normally, but once you notice the blocky pitch your eyes are strangely drawn towards it.

I have a 37" Viera and there is some 'blockiness' however no motion smearing. Football isn't the best thing the plasma is for, however if watching it through RGB it's not too bad!

I have no motion smearing, but a blocky pitch.

It is signal related as well though, cause some channels seem better than others.
