Anyone know if the Apple centre in the Bullring, Birmingham is stocking them yet?
I pity anyone who bought an iPod last month.
I can now get a new 80Gb one for the price of the 30Gb one a week ago.
Not sure about the new look for the Nano though.

Can anyone report on some of the first places to get them in the UK? I want to see them in person before I decide on black or silver.

they are describe as 'available immediately' but I don't know if that's restricted to online sales at the moment while they get stock in to the retailers.

there's a good chance I'm headed to the Apple Store in Glasgow today to try and pick up a 160Gb classic, so I'll let you know how I get on.

I asked the Apple Shop Bluewater yesterday when they were expecting stock of the new Classic and Nano, and was told "dunno - we only know what we're getting when the delivery arrives". Not helpful...

it's in Buchanan Street, just off St Vincent Street. Used to be The Pier, and opened last weekend or the week before.

sounds like the uk stores don't yet have them in stock, so may have to wait until next week :(

Comet also don't have them yet and they don't know when they will...

Amazon have release date as 24th of September and Curry's website says 8-11 days for delivery so it all points to widespread release at around the same time...

I ordered an iPod Video 30gb for 149.99 on Monday from ebuyer, without realising a new one was being released, so luckily I caught them before it has been dispatched and cancelled my order. Lucky eh? :p

Has anyone been to the Apple store in Birmingham today and if so do they have any of the new iPods? I've tried to ring a few times but get no answer.

No classic in the Bullring at 2pm. New nano's there (still with the old prices on display for some!) but classics not in. Didn't bother asking when they would be because i really don't care! Bring on the touch!

Used this code to buy a 160gb Classic. I simply added a £6 pack off earbuds taking me to the £235 required. OK, so it's £14 & some earbuds off rather than £20 off but better than nothing eh?

3% (Pre VAT price) rebate if you register with Quidco

Thanks Fruvos for the promo code:smashin:

ars technica have an interesting review of the Classic and new Nano.

One point that cropped up constantly in the review was how sluggish they felt (this was one of my main concerns on the announcement day too):

I just been to regent street and they had the nano and classics in.
i have to admit i agree with the sluggishness of the new ipods. (more noticeable with classic - not sure if it is coz its HDD based.)
however...these minor 'faults' can be easily fixed with firware updates.

My 160GB classic has just been delivered (ordered last Thursday morning), and the menu system doesn't seem particularly sluggish to me. Mind you, there's no music on it yet...

Edit : I've just read the review on Ars Technica, and a couple of things occur to me. In a lot of the menus, you can see cover art being displayed as thumbnails next to menu items. This is definitely going to make things slower when browsing, as the iPod has to extract the relevant jpeg, decode it and blit it to the screen. I'm prepared to bet that losing cover art will speed up browsing a lot. Also, from the teardowns, the classic appears to have the same battery as the 5G, and yet it has double the battery life. I'd bet that at least part of that power saving comes from slowing down the processor. Given the choice between a faster UI and another 20 hours of playing music, I know which I'd choose...

Yep, heard this elsewhere - in fact some of Apples promotion vids have suggested a sluggish UI, mainly when using Cover Flow though i thought. Bit worrying, planning to get one ASAP :(

For anyone who ordered theirs from Apple, could you tell me how long delivery took from its dispatch date. Also was the estimated dispatch date correct from Apple?

Just curious as i want to know how quick i'll get the Touch!

I'm not sure it will work out that much cheaper than you can get at the airport on your way out. Factoring in an exchange rate charge on your conversion from $ to £ and then adding in sales tax of 8-10% and it probably ain't much different to one at Dixons on the way out without the 17.5% VAT. That is of course if they have them in stock at the airport.
