Is the high street getting cheaper?

I have noticed that the last couple of new release DVDs I have bought have been just as cheap on the high street as the main online retailers.

eg

LOTR was £18.99 in HMV, Sainsburys, WH Smiths etc which is the same price as Amazon and Streets online etc.

Is this a general trend (is the high street trying to compete) or have I just fallen lucky?

I think you need to change your online retailers!

LOTR R2 @ Play.com - £16.99

LOTR R2 @ cd-wow.com - £14.99

I know you said "main" but I don't think many people on this forum would use Amazon or StreetsOnline as the main place to purchase their Region 2 DVDs.

Someone is and they're using my credit card number

I got my region 1 LOTR for 13.99:D

Having said that, I do think the high street is getting a little cheaper.

WHSmith regularly offer new releases at 16.99, which is obviously more expensive than Play, but is better than 19.99:)

Yes, WHS can be as good, or better, than online retailers for 1st week releases of some boxsets - of late both CSI and West Wing el cheapo.

Music Zone are the cheapest High St chain i've seen for DVDs.
They're usually only a £1 dearer the Play.

I don't think the High Street is getting any cheaper on the whole, although some stores do use 'loss' leaders (not that they actually lose anything of cause...) and 2 for 1 deals to give the impression that they can compete with online retailers. So there is the odd bargain to be had, just so long as your preference ties in with their promotion...

As I only buy R1 DVDs, the High Street is irrelevant to me. For hardware, I would never pay the 25% to 30% higher prices (aka RRP) demanded by the 'but we'll give you 0% interest' High Street stores.

Tesco's have some good deals to - they were doing LOTR at £9.99 (if you spent more than £50 in the store!).

I've bought stuff I never intended too at Woolies, just 'cos they are sometimes cheap. Braveheart is going for 9.99 in some of them, new releases are often 13.99 or so.

It's probably as good as any online stores SALE prices.

Check Virgin's new release prices against any online retailer...

Was in Woolies today and they had LOTR for 16.99. I then went in Virgin (little store, not megastore) and bought Titan AE and Event Horizon for 9.99 each. Not too bad.
