Is the Cambridge 540R good enough for a couple of B&W 704?

    Hi,

As the topic says I'm looking to buy a HIFI/HC system for about 50/50% use.
I'm inclined to buy the 704 but I'm wondering if a Cambridge 540R would be enough to drive them or if I should go with a bigger model in which case I would consider downgrading the 704 to the 600 series.

    Tks for your replies.

    Cheers

It will struggle with a speaker that big as there is a fair old price imbalance between the two and most B&W designs are current hungry.

Speakers of that calibre need a better amp than that to do them justice.

    As a minimum I'd be looking at a SR7400, RX-V1400 or 2805.

Maybe a NAD T753? I could perhaps stretch my budget for that much is the 704 are really worth it. What do you think?

I work for another speaker manufacturer and am not B&W's number 1 fan so won't comment further. The T753 is a nice receiver though. Perhaps a little expensive for what it is.

I would suggest you look at S/H or Exdemo Rotel and HK kit as these can deliver thelarge current demands that B&W speakers can make. HK AVR 4500/4550 would be up to the job and should be found for well under £500 if anyone has any stock left. Newer HK will cost you a lot more for very similar performance and a lesser build quality.

    SR7400, RX-V1400 or 2805 are at a good level.

    Sr7400 for better sound match!
