Is my Sony STR-DG700 dying, or am I missing something?

Hi guys.

My STR-DG700 may be about to die, but I just wanted to clarify before splashing out on a new AV.

The past few weeks, when I go to watch TV, or DVD, I'm presented with a blocky grey picture, like a blocky version of the old intereference you used to get on TV, or when SKY used to block channels.

After half an hours fiddling, switching cables and whatnot, it seems that the AVR is having problems passing through HDMI signals.
Connecting the SKY-HD, or DVD, direct tot he TV produces no problems, and I think I've chacked the HDMI cables thoroughly (though it gets a tad confusing after half an hour of plugging and unplugging).
Eventually (normally after I've plugged everything back in, and switched it all off and on again) normal service is resumed, at least for a week or so. Then it happens again...
I don't have any problems using component for my Xbox.

I've already replaced a brand new TV, believeing that the HDMI sockets had 'gone'.

Is it normal for an amp to just stop passing through a HDMI signal?
Or does it sound more like a dodgy cabling issue?
