    ... from a simple SR5400?

I'm an audio hi-fi stereo fan not very fond of surrond...

I bought it and sent it straight back. I found it too muddy. If you want Marantz I think the 7400 is better value.

I saw at least one review that the 5400 OSE was far better in sound than the 7300/7400...

    What you mean muddy?

I have the SR7400, and have heard the SR5400OSE, the SR7400 is much better for music, although the SR5400OSE isn't bad for an AV amp.

Home Cinema Choice magazine rate the SR7400 as one of the most (if not the most) musical AV receivers they have heard at the price.

In direct mode it is sublime, and incredibly accurate. It gives a warmer sound with movies, so not quite as much slam and snap as some of the more exciting receivers out there which are more movie focused.

If you want the most musical, go for the SR7400, or one of the new Nads, they are worth a look too.

Tons of Fun did a review and his conclusion was the 5400OSE was better at stereo than the 7400 but didnt have as much snap in home cinema as 7400.

Really? I missed that one, I could have sworn he prefered the SR7400 over the SR5400OSE for both music and movies?

I found the SR7400 a much more pleasant listen in stereo than the SR5400OSE I heard.

If you can listen to the SR5400OSE and the SR7400 side by side, you could judge yourself. It's always better to take your own CD's and listen to things side by side before making up your mind.

Yup, TOF did say that the OSE was better than the 7400.

To my ears though, I preferred the sound from the SR7400, just goes to show the importance of a personal test as everybodies taste is different.

But as for SR5400 "normal" vs. OSE?

    To try and restate
I found the OSE was a much better bet in stereo (and MC SACD) than the standard 5400 but had no real performance gain in DD/DTS (even music DVD's). I have not had the time to try the OSE against the 7400 (especially as the OSE is living with one of the IT guys at the moment) but I would put their stereo performance very close to each other with not a great deal to tell them apart in my opinion based upon our listening room and the speakers therin. I would expect that in larger rooms, the 7400's greater power would play a part in the mix as well.

    SR 5400 – 799,0€

Personal taste, but I found the 5400ose lacking detail. I'm 90% music and this just didn't do it for me. HK seemed much brighter which I prefer. But take a listen yourself. Marantz rolls off the treble if that's what you call warm. For the money the HK230 is better for stereo. My 5400ose showed 'peak' even on modest volumes coupled with a Marantz cd7300 (strange).

    Falp,

I guess that retailers are keeping close to the suggested retail prices.
This is what I found on the Lisbon area:

    marantz sr-5400
    fnac:798€
    mediamarkt:790€

    marantz sr-4400
    worten:514€
    fnac:519€

I guess my new AV amp will come from a web retailer in Germany,
unless someone is kind enough to point me to competitive prices
in Portugal or Uk web retailers that ship to continental europe.

    Regards

You can get the 5400 in German Web shops at around 600€, and the OSE for less than 800€.

At Portugal outside those big shops you can get at least 10% Off...

I've just had a look at Fnac's web shop.
The Marantz SR-5300 costs 599 EUR.

    Still too expensive.
I've just found a German web retailer that does COD:
    http://www.tsn-cd.de/
I'll probably buy an Yamaha 650 or 750 from them.
(although the new Yamahas are ugly !!)

    Thanks,
